Chapter 5: Shadows in the Syndicate

The Cane Organization did not operate in a vacuum. By noon, word had spread across the waterfront: Vincent Cane had brought a woman and a child into the penthouse. To men who lived by leverage and fear, family was not a blessing—it was a bullseye.

In a subterranean cigar lounge near the docks, Mateo Rossi sat across from three senior captains. The air was thick with tobacco smoke and malice.

"Cane is losing his edge," Rossi muttered, tapping his signet ring on the glass table. "A stray woman from his past walks in with a kid, and suddenly he cancels the shipment meeting in Queens? He’s soft."

"He’s still Vincent Cane, Mateo," an older captain cautioned. "You don't cross him unless you're ready to bury half the harbor."

"He was dangerous because he had nothing to lose," Rossi countered, leaning forward with a cold grin. "No wife. No kids. No conscience. Now? He’s got an anchor tied around his neck. If Cane wants to play house, he can step aside. If he won't step aside, we find out just how much that little girl in the pink dress is worth to him."

Meanwhile, Declan stood outside Vincent’s private office, his phone pressed to his ear. When he hung up, his face was pale. He pushed open the heavy oak door.

"Boss," Declan said quietly. "Rossi’s people are sniffing around the old neighborhood. They’ve already pulled Clara’s file from the precinct."

Vincent didn't look up from his desk. "Let them look. Double the detail around the floor. And Declan?"

"Yeah?"

"If one of Rossi’s men comes within fifty feet of this building, don't call the police. Call the clean-up crew."
