Chapter 15: The Sky Above the Valley

Later that night, after the dishes were cleared and the house had settled into quiet warmth, Vincent carried a sleepy Lily out onto the back porch wrapped in a thick wool blanket. Clara followed, holding two steaming mugs of cocoa.
The winter sky was crystal clear, deep velvet black and scattered with thousands of sharp, glittering stars. The valley below was peaceful, covered in a blanket of pristine white snow.
Lily looked up, her heavy eyelids blinking against the cold air.
"Vincent?" she whispered.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are those the astronaut stars?"
Vincent looked up at the vast expanse of the night sky. For years, stars had represented coldness, distance, and the terrifying price of survival. But tonight, looking at the light shining down on their home, they meant something entirely different.

"No, Lily," Vincent said softly, his voice full of warmth and peace. "Those aren't the astronaut stars. Those are just lights to remind us that no matter how dark the night gets, tomorrow always brings the sun."
Clara leaned her head against Vincent’s shoulder, watching Lily drift off to sleep in his arms. The ledger was finally closed. The debts were fully paid. And for the first time in their lives, the stars were just beautiful.
