Chapter 6 - The Principal’s Surprising Summons

Just before the start of third-period math class, the classroom door swung open softly, and Mrs. Gable, the stern veteran teacher, whispered something to Mr. Davis at the chalkboard. Mr. Davis paused mid-equation, turned around, and adjusted his glasses before looking directly down the center aisle.

“Lily, the principal’s office would like to see you for a brief moment,” Mr. Davis announced gently, breaking from his usual monotone delivery.

A collective murmur rippled through the classroom. Whispers broke out among the rows of desks, with a few students glancing sideways at Lily with a mix of curiosity and awe. Chloe slumped lower in her chair, her arms tightly crossed over her chest, refusing to meet Lily's gaze. Lily felt a brief flutter of anxiety in her stomach, wondering if the viral video had somehow violated a school policy, but she gathered her old backpack and walked quietly toward the door.

The walk down the sunlit hallway felt remarkably peaceful. When she reached the main office, Principal Higgins—a towering, usually intimidating man with a booming voice—was standing by his desk holding a large, beautifully wrapped package bearing the logo of Urban Gear & Luggage.

“Ah, come on in, Lily,” Principal Higgins said, his stern expression melting into a warm, crinkling smile. “Take a seat.”

Lily sat down on the wooden chair opposite his heavy oak desk, her hands resting neatly in her lap.

“I assume you and your father have seen the incredible response to Mr. Marcus’s video online?” the principal asked, sliding the large package across the polished wood surface.

Lily nodded slowly, her big eyes fixed on the decorative ribbon tied around the box.

“Well, our district office has received dozens of calls this morning from local organizations, community leaders, and even regional educational grants wanting to support students in need,” Principal Higgins continued, leaning forward with genuine admiration in his voice. “More importantly, the kindness you showed in that video touched a lot of hearts. Open it.”

Lily’s trembling fingers untied the silver ribbon, pulling back the thick wrapping paper to reveal the exact navy blue space-patterned backpack she had admired the night before. But as she lifted it out of the box, she realized it felt heavier than expected. Reaching inside the main compartment, her fingers brushed against something solid—a brand-new, fully loaded art set and a heavy envelope bearing the school district seal.

Before she could ask what was inside, the office telephone began to ring incessantly, and the school secretary rushed in with a stack of signed permission slips for an unexpected city-wide youth mentorship program.
