Chapter 10 - The Bank’s Cold Algorithmic Strike

The sharp buzz of Arthur’s phone cut through the celebratory atmosphere like a sudden gust of arctic wind. He pulled the device from his pocket, his eyes scanning the digital alert from the bank. A thirty-five-dollar overdraft fee had just been automatically deducted, wiping out the remaining cash he had set aside for utility bills that week. The stark reality of their financial fragility slammed back into focus, reminding him that a government grant tomorrow morning couldn't solve the empty pantry sitting in their kitchen tonight.
Elena noticed the sudden tightening of Arthur’s jaw and the subtle pallor that washed over his face.
“Is everything alright, Mr. Sterling?” she asked, lowering her tablet slightly.
“It's... fine. Just banking logistics,” Arthur muttered, quickly slipping the phone back into his pocket and forcing a thin, unconvincing smile for Lily’s sake. He couldn't let his daughter see the panic currently clawing at his chest.
Lily looked up at her father, her intuition picking up on the micro-expression of stress that adults often thought children were too naive to notice. She gently let go of her backpack strap and placed her small, warm hand over Arthur’s calloused knuckles, offering the exact same quiet reassurance that he had given her outside the school gates just twenty-four hours earlier.
“We'll be okay, Daddy,” Lily whispered softly, echoing his own words back to him with absolute, unwavering faith.
Arthur’s throat tightened, a fierce wave of emotion threatening to break his composure. He knelt down on one knee, pulling Lily into a firm, protective embrace right there on the sidewalk as the black sedan idled quietly in the background.
Marcus watched the tender scene unfold, his own expression turning solemn. He stepped forward, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a folded cash envelope from the day's register earnings.
“Arthur, take this. It's an advance on the community donation fund we set up this morning,” Marcus insisted, pressing the envelope into Arthur’s hand before he could protest. “Don't argue with me. Pay the bank, buy some groceries, and meet Elena at her office downtown tomorrow at nine sharp.”
Before Arthur could formulate a response, Elena nodded in agreement, handing him a direct contact card for the bank's hardship division to waive the predatory fee.

As they walked the final blocks back to their apartment building under the deepening twilight, a sleek, unmarked luxury car slowly rolled past them, its tinted windows lowering just an inch as someone inside took a photograph of Arthur and Lily walking beneath the streetlights.
