Chapter 13 - The Dawn Confrontation at the Rail Yard

The abandoned rail yard on the industrial edge of town was a desolate wasteland of rusted iron rails, overgrown weeds, and decaying brick warehouses that cast long, skeletal shadows in the pale pre-dawn light. A biting morning fog rolled in from the nearby river, clinging to Arthur’s trench coat as he stepped out of his battered sedan. He clutched his leather briefcase tightly against his chest, his eyes scanning the cavernous shadows between two rusted boxcars.

“I'm here!” Arthur called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. “Show yourself!”

A pair of heavy boots crunched against the gravel. Out from the fog stepped a tall, imposing figure wearing a dark hoodie pulled low over his face, holding a sleek smartphone with the recording light blinking aggressively. It wasn't a ruthless corporate assassin or a dangerous loan shark, but rather a notorious local clickbait vlogger known online as 'TruthSeeker Joe,' a man notorious for fabricating internet scandals for advertising revenue.

“Ah, the struggling dad arrives right on schedule,” Joe sneered, keeping his phone pointed straight at Arthur’s face. “You know, your little viral stunt with the backpack pulled in over fifty grand in community pledges. That's a lot of taxpayer and donor money for a guy with an unverified credit history.”

“I didn't ask for a handout, and the funds are managed directly by the state housing trust and Marcus’s store,” Arthur retorted, taking a measured step forward, his restrained anger boiling just beneath the surface. “Delete the photos, Joe. Leave my family out of your clickbait trash.”

Joe laughed coldly, stepping closer and waving the smartphone inches from Arthur’s nose. “Delete them? Are you kidding? This is gold! I post this exposé right before the morning filing deadline, the state council pulls your grant, and my channel gets another million views. It's just business, Sterling.”

Arthur didn't yell. He didn't throw a punch. Instead, he maintained complete, icy eye contact, slowly opening his leather briefcase with one hand. He pulled out a certified legal document bearing the official watermark of the state Attorney General’s office—a preemptive character clearance certificate secured late last night through Elena Vance's rapid-response legal team.

“Before you hit upload, Joe, you might want to look at who authorized my background check,” Arthur said calmly, holding the document up to the camera lens. “Defame me or my daughter online again, and the state's cyber-fraud division won't just hit your channel with a copyright strike—they'll seize every asset you own for extortion.”

Joe’s mocking grin vanished instantly. The color drained from his face as he read the official seal on the paper.

Before the vlogger could stammer out a defense, the screech of tires echoed across the rail yard entrance as two unmarked police cruisers and Elena Vance’s black sedan pulled in, their high-beam headlights blindingly pinning TruthSeeker Joe against the rusted boxcar.
