Chapter 11 - The Midnight Surveillance

The digital clock on the microwave glowed a harsh 12:42 AM. The apartment was entirely silent save for the hum of the old refrigerator and Arthur’s rhythmic typing at the kitchen table. He had spent the last three hours scanning tax documents, pay stubs, and utility notices, uploading them securely to the state housing portal provided by Elena Vance. Every single document had to be flawless; a single clerical error could collapse the entire grant process before sunrise.
Lily was fast asleep in her small bedroom, her new space-patterned backpack resting proudly on the nightstand beside her bed like a silent guardian under the moonlight.
Arthur rubbed his tired eyes, reaching out to take a sip of his cold coffee. As he looked out the small kitchen window facing the quiet alleyway below, something caught his attention. Parked near the overflowing municipal dumpster across the street was a dark sedan with tinted windows—the exact same car that had drifted past them on their walk home hours earlier. The engine was off, but the driver’s side window was cracked open just enough to reveal the faint glow of a handheld camera flash reflecting against the interior rearview mirror.
Arthur’s heart skipped a beat. He stood up slowly from the table, careful not to let the wooden chair scrape against the linoleum floor. He walked cautiously to the window, pulling the thin fabric curtain aside by a single inch.
The dark sedan remained motionless, its presence heavy and predatory in the sleeping neighborhood. Was it a debt collector tracking his meager accounts? Was it a cynical internet blogger trying to dig up dirt on the viral video to debunk the family's story for online clout? Or was it something far more dangerous related to the housing fund commissioner's high-profile office?
Arthur reached for his phone on the counter, intending to snap a photo of the license plate, but before his camera app could fully load, the sedan’s headlights flashed twice in rapid succession. The engine roared to life with a deep, throaty purr, and the vehicle sped away into the winding alleys, leaving behind only the smell of burnt rubber and a chilling sense of unease.

Arthur stood frozen by the window for several long minutes, his mind racing through endless worst-case scenarios. He quietly walked down the narrow hallway to check on Lily, cracking her bedroom door open to ensure she was safe. As he looked in at her peaceful, sleeping face, his phone buzzed violently on the kitchen counter, displaying an unknown text message containing a single, horrifying photograph taken from inside the alleyway just minutes earlier.
