Chapter 12 - The Blackmail Text

Arthur stared down at the glowing screen of his phone, the air leaving his lungs in a sharp, ragged gasp. The text message from the unknown number contained a single high-resolution image: a clear, unflattering photograph of him standing by his kitchen window earlier that night, looking exhausted and vulnerable. Beneath the photo was a cold, calculated text message typed in stark capital letters:

“Nice backpack the kid got. It would be a shame if the viral fund was canceled due to an undisclosed past financial discrepancy. Meet me at the abandoned rail yard by dawn, or the state portal gets a copy of your old eviction records.”

Arthur’s hands began to shake slightly. He hadn't been formally evicted—he had managed to break his previous lease voluntarily three years ago after losing his warehouse job—but in the sterile, unforgiving world of government grants and algorithmic compliance, a manipulated paper trail could easily be spun as fraud by someone determined to destroy their chances.

He looked toward the digital clock on the microwave. It was 3:15 AM. Dawn was less than three hours away.

If he went to the rail yard, he risked walking into a trap set by internet trolls, predatory loan sharks, or malicious competitors trying to hijack the community fund. But if he stayed home and ignored the threat, the fragile lifeline that Marcus and Elena had worked so hard to build could be instantly vaporized by an anonymous smear campaign before the morning filing deadline.

Arthur walked quietly to the living room closet, reaching behind a stack of old winter coats to retrieve a heavy metal lockbox. He keyed in the combination—his mother’s birthday—and lifted the lid. Inside sat his remaining cash reserve, a few family photographs, and a legal document from his previous employer certifying his clean work record. He slid the documents into his worn leather briefcase, his jaw set in a hard, resolute line. He couldn't let anyone take away Lily's future.

As he quietly grabbed his jacket from the hook by the front door, the bedroom door creaked open an inch. Lily stood in the dim hallway, rubbing her tired eyes, her small fingers clutching the edge of her pajama top.

“Daddy? Where are you going?” Lily asked softly, her voice filled with instinctive dread.

May you like

Arthur froze, his hand resting on the brass doorknob, desperately searching for a lie that wouldn't shatter her fragile sense of security.
