The Sanctuary of Iron

By 8:00 PM, the suburban house was locked down under police perimeter watch. But Detective Miller was realistic.

"Patrick knows this house’s layout, Claire," Miller explained, pacing the kitchen as a tactical officer checked the window latches. "He designed the home security integration when you were married. If he has secondary bypass codes, staying here turns your home into a trap."

"Where do we go?" Claire asked, holding Lily, who had finally fallen into an uneasy, twitching sleep on the sofa, still clutching Barnaby.

"A safe house operated by the State Family Protection Task Force," Miller said. "An undisclosed address in the old mill district. Reinforced steel doors, separate power grid, zero digital footprint."

Claire packed a single canvas duffel bag: three changes of clothes, Lily’s asthma inhaler, a drawing pad, and the stuffed rabbit. She didn't take jewelry, documents, or photos. In moments of pure survival, the weight of the past is stripped down to the essentials of human breath.

They were escorted out the rear garage into an unmarked, armored utility vehicle. As the car pulled down the alleyway, Claire looked back through the tinted glass.

Parked two blocks away under the dark canopy of an overgrown maple tree sat a charcoal sedan, its headlights extinguished.

For a fraction of a second, the amber streetlamp illuminated the interior: a man sitting behind the steering wheel, binoculars pressed against his eyes.

"Miller," Claire gasped, grabbing the front seat headrest. "He’s there. On Elm Street."

Miller grabbed his radio. "All units, target spotted at Elm and 4th! Intercept immediately!"

Before the police cruisers could block the intersection, the sedan's engine roared to life, tires screeching across the asphalt as Patrick blew through the red light, vanishing into the maze of evening traffic.
