The Unbroken Name

Two months passed.

Winter arrived, coating the suburban neighborhood in a pristine blanket of white snow. The house that had once felt like a pressurized trap had been transformed into a warm, vibrant sanctuary of light and laughter.

Claire had officially been appointed as the executive trustee of the Arthur Linwood Municipal Pension Foundation—the very fund her late father had fought so hard to protect. With the unsealed evidence, sixty million dollars in embezzled worker assets were recovered and returned to thousands of retired city laborers and their families.

One Saturday morning, Claire stood in the living room, watching Lily and her cousins build a massive snow fort in the front yard. The sound of children’s laughter rang through the frosted glass, pure and joyous.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Claire opened it to find Detective Miller standing on the porch, wearing his familiar heavy coat and a wide, friendly smile. He held a large manila envelope.

"Detective," Claire smiled warmly, stepping aside. "Come in out of the cold. I have fresh coffee."

"Just a brief visit, Claire," Miller said, stepping into the warm entryway. "I wanted to hand-deliver the final decree from the family court. Sole legal custody, sole physical custody, and an irreversible termination of Patrick’s parental rights."
