The Whistle in the Fog

Patrick’s smile vanished, replaced by an impatient, venomous scowl. "Don't play games at the finish line, Claire. You know what I have in my briefcase. Hand over my daughter."
"She isn't your property, Patrick," Claire replied. "She is a human being. And she knows the difference between a game and a crime."
Patrick looked at Lily, dropping into a squat and using the gentle, manufactured tone he had practiced for months. "Lily... sweetie. Come to Daddy. Remember our game? Remember the secret whistle?"
Patrick pursed his lips and blew two short, sharp whistles into the damp air.
Lily looked at him from her mother’s arms. Her small face was completely still, devoid of the tears that had frightened her the night before. She looked into her father's eyes, seeing not a protector, but a stranger who had tried to teach her how to lie.
"No, Daddy," Lily said, her clear, young voice echoing across the wooden pier. "I don't hide in the dark anymore. Mommy taught me how to stand in the sun."

Before his fingers could touch the fabric of her jacket, the darkness around the pier exploded with light.
