Standing in the Sun

That evening, as the sun set behind the snow-capped pines, casting shades of rose and violet across the winter sky, Claire and Lily stood together on the front porch.

The neighborhood was quiet, amber streetlamps glowing like warm lanterns along the avenue. Lily held Claire’s hand, her small fingers warm and secure inside Claire’s palm.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, looking up at the first evening star appearing in the clear sky.

"Yes, my love?"

"When I grow up, can I be brave like you?"

Claire knelt down on the snow-dusted porch, looking straight into her daughter’s clear, unshadowed eyes. She gently tucked a strand of blonde hair behind Lily’s ear.

"You are already braver than I ever was, Lily," Claire said softly, her voice filled with an unbreakable, maternal devotion. "Because you chose the truth. And whenever you feel afraid, whenever the world tries to make you hide in the shadows, remember this: the light will always find you as long as you refuse to look away."

Lily threw her small arms around Claire’s neck, hugging her with all her strength.

Together, they stood on the quiet porch in the crisp evening air, watching the stars illuminate the snow, knowing that the foundation beneath their feet was finally solid, unyielding, and whole.
