The Sound of the Floorboards / Chapter 14 / 15

The Resting Place of Barnaby

Claire looked down at the embossed legal document in her hands. For eight years, she had lived under the looming, suffocating threat of Patrick’s manipulation, always waiting for the other shoe to drop, always listening for the sound of floorboards creaking in the night.

Now, the paper in her hands was not a shield; it was a permanent monument of freedom.

"Thank you, Mark," Claire said, her voice thick with deep emotion. "For everything."

"You did the work, Claire," Miller said, looking out the window at Lily making snow angels in the yard. "Most people run when fear knocks on the door. You stood your ground and gave that little girl her childhood back."

After Miller departed, Claire walked up the stairs to Lily’s bedroom.

The room was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. On the wooden shelf above the bed sat Barnaby the rabbit, his stitched back completely healed, sitting proudly beside Lily’s school awards and family photos.

Claire picked up the rabbit, feeling the soft fur beneath her fingers. She remembered her father’s hands sewing the seam thirty years ago, preparing a hidden truth that would one day save his granddaughter’s life.

"Thank you, Dad," Claire whispered into the quiet room. "We’re safe now."
