Chapter 9

Marcus sat at his cluttered wooden desk, the glow of his dual computer monitors casting a pale, bluish light across his tense face. Piles of investigative notes, bank statements, and corporate dossiers were scattered haphazardly around his keyboard. Across the room, Clara sat in the sagging velvet armchair, nursing Leo while Marcus’s small electric space heater hummed a steady, comforting warmth against the morning chill.

"I checked the public hospital registry database," Marcus said, tapping rapidly on his keyboard. "Your admission record has been completely wiped. As far as the state health department is concerned, you were never pregnant, you never checked into Room 402, and Leo was never born."

Clara felt a cold knot form in her stomach. "Wiped? How is that even possible? The birth certificate, the prenatal scans, my medical history—it's all documented."

"Money, power, and digital manipulation," Marcus replied grimly, spinning his chair around to face her. "The Sterlings didn't just lock you in that room; they initiated a legal phantom protocol. They’ve legally erased your maternity, substituting a surrogate record funded by one of Eleanor's shell corporations. In the eyes of the law right now, you are a trespasser who stole an infant from a private maternity ward."

The sheer audacity of the conspiracy left Clara speechless. They hadn't just stolen her son; they had rewritten reality itself to make her the criminal. If she walked into a police station right now, she would be arrested on the spot as a delusional kidnapper, and Leo would be handed right back to Eleanor without a second thought.

"So what do we do?" Clara asked, her voice steadying as a cold, resolute determination replaced her earlier despair. "We can't hide in this apartment forever. Eventually, they'll find us."

"We fight back with their own weapons," Marcus said, leaning forward. "Eleanor thinks she’s untouchable, but every digital erasure leaves a footprint. The hospital's physical servers are backed up off-site every night at midnight. If we can get our hands on the raw backup logs from the night you gave birth, we can prove you were admitted legally, that Arthur signed the consent forms as the biological father, and that the medical kidnapping was premeditated."

"Where is the backup server located?" Clara asked immediately.

"In the basement data vault of the central medical center," Marcus admitted, scratching the back of his neck with a grimace. "Which happens to be heavily guarded by private security twenty-four hours a day. It's essentially a fortress."

Clara looked down at Leo, who was sleeping soundly against her chest, completely oblivious to the war being fought over his existence. She thought about Eleanor’s cold, triumphant smile through the glass window, and Arthur’s cowardly compliance in the hallway. They had backed her into a corner, stripped her of her dignity, and tried to erase her very identity. They had made a fatal mistake: they had underestimated how far a mother would go to protect her child.

"Then we break back in," Clara said quietly, her voice ringing with absolute certainty.

Marcus stared at her for a long moment, blinking behind his glasses, before a slow, approving grin spread across his face. "You really are Arthur's worst nightmare, aren't you?"
