Chapter 3

Outside Room 402, the institutional fluorescent lights hummed a low, erratic tune. Nurse Sarah stood rigidly against the opposing wall, her arms crossed tightly over her white scrubs. Her stethoscope dangled like a heavy anchor, and beneath her surgical mask, her jaw was clenched so hard it ached. She watched Arthur and Eleanor hovering near the door, a sickening display of upper-class entitlement masquerading as family concern.

"You're making a mistake," Sarah muttered, her voice low enough that only the sterile air absorbed it.

Eleanor didn't even bother to turn her head fully. She merely glanced sideways, her cold blue eyes slicing through Sarah with surgical precision. "You were paid to deliver a child and monitor vitals, Nurse. You were not hired to formulate opinions on family matters. Now, keep your distance, or we will ensure your medical license is nothing more than a distant memory."

Arthur ran a hand through his blonde hair, looking profoundly uncomfortable. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, unable to meet Sarah's accusing glare. "Sarah, please. It's for the best. Clara isn't well. She's suffering from severe postpartum psychosis. She’s a danger to herself and the baby."

Sarah felt a surge of hot rage rise in her chest. She had admitted Clara three days ago. She had witnessed the young woman's quiet strength, her profound joy when she felt the baby kick, her complete lucidity. There was no psychosis here; there was only a wealthy family terrified that an ordinary woman would retain custody of an heir born into a dynasty built on secrets.

"She is entirely coherent, Mr. Sterling," Sarah said, stepping forward slightly, her professional boundary slipping. "And you know it. What you and your mother are doing is kidnapping under the guise of medical intervention."

Eleanor stepped closer to Sarah, her perfume—expensive, sharp, smelling of white florals and old money—invading Sarah's personal space. "Watch your tone, young lady," Eleanor whispered, her voice venomous and entirely devoid of warmth. "My son is the sole heir to the Sterling estate. That child carries our blood, our name, and our future. A woman from nowhere, with no family and no resources, does not get to inject her chaotic genetics into our lineage. The paperwork is signed. The doctors have been compensated. By morning, Clara will be transferred to a private psychiatric facility upstate, and the baby will be placed in my legal custody."

Inside the room, unaware of the explicit details but fully conscious of the mortal peril, Clara pressed her back against the wall adjacent to the door. She had heard enough. The whispers carried through the vents, confirming her worst nightmares. They weren't just going to take Leo; they were going to erase her existence entirely, painting her as a madwoman to the world while she rotted in some forgotten asylum.

Clara looked down at the infant sleeping peacefully in her arms. A fierce, protective instinct, older than civilization itself, surged through her veins. She could not wait for them to make their move. She had to find a way out of this room before dawn broke and the corridor filled with administrative staff who would look the other way for the right price.
