Chapter 13

Ten minutes later, the federal courthouse lobby was a chaotic scene of flashing camera lights, scrambling journalists, and federal marshals holding back an aggressive horde of reporters. Word of the federal investigation into the Sterling family's medical conspiracy had leaked to the press through Marcus's media contacts, turning the courthouse steps into a media circus.
Eleanor Sterling stood near the revolving glass doors, flanked by her private security detail. Her tailored grey blazer was still immaculate, but her composure had entirely dissolved. Her face was rigid with suppressed fury as she realized her meticulously constructed empire of wealth and influence was crumbling around her.
As Clara walked out of the double elevators holding Leo, accompanied by Attorney Vance and Marcus, the flashing cameras immediately pivoted toward her. A wave of shouted questions echoed off the marble walls of the lobby.
"Mrs. Sterling! Is it true your family engineered a fake psychiatric hold?"
"Did you attempt to steal your own grandson?"
Clara didn't flinch. She adjusted Leo against her chest, stepping out into the open space with her head held high. She looked directly at Eleanor, who stood just a few feet away, trapped by the cameras and the presence of federal marshals.
Eleanor stepped forward, her voice trembling with venomous disbelief. "You think you've won something here, Clara? You've destroyed your own family. You've ruined Arthur's career. You'll never see a dime of the Sterling estate."
"I don't want your money, Eleanor," Clara said clearly, her voice carrying easily over the murmur of the crowd. "I never did. All I ever wanted was to be a mother to my son, free from your control."
Before Eleanor could reply, two federal marshals stepped forward, placing formal federal subpoenas and restraint orders directly into her hands. "Eleanor Sterling, you are formally served with a federal injunction prohibiting any contact with Clara Sterling and minor child Leo Sterling, pending criminal proceedings for conspiracy and kidnapping."

Eleanor looked down at the documents in her hands, her face draining of all color. For the first time in her life, wealth and power had failed to shield her from the consequences of her actions. She turned silently, pushing past her security detail, and fled through the revolving doors into the gray afternoon rain.
Arthur stood near the exit, watching his mother leave without offering a word of defense. He looked toward Clara one last time, his eyes filled with a deep, irredeemable regret, before turning away and walking out into the opposite direction, disappearing into the anonymous crowd.
