Chapter 12

The federal district attorney's office on the eighth floor of the federal courthouse was quiet, smelling of fresh coffee, polished wood, and bureaucratic finality. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Vance—a sharp, no-nonsense woman with silver-streaked hair and piercing gray eyes—sat behind her large mahogany desk, reviewing the contents of Marcus's flash drive on her secure terminal.

Clara sat across from her, holding Leo, who was now dressed in a clean yellow onesie Marcus had purchased at an all-night pharmacy. Beside Clara, Marcus sat with his arms crossed, watching the attorney's face carefully.

For ten long minutes, the only sound in the office was the steady clicking of the attorney's mouse as she opened encrypted files, read internal hospital memos, and examined Arthur's signed financial documents. Finally, Attorney Vance closed the folder, leaned back in her leather chair, and looked directly at Clara.

"These files document a severe violation of federal medical privacy laws, conspiracy to commit custodial kidnapping, and intentional infliction of emotional distress," Attorney Vance said slowly, her voice measured and professional. "With this evidence, I can issue emergency federal injunctions against Eleanor Sterling and the hospital administration within the hour. But you need to understand something, Mrs. Sterling—once I file these charges, there is no turning back. You will be stepping directly into the public spotlight."

"I don't care about the spotlight," Clara replied, her voice steady and resolute. "I just want my son protected, and I want them held accountable for what they tried to do."

Before Attorney Vance could respond, the heavy wooden door to her office swung open abruptly. Arthur strode into the room, flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys in sharp charcoal suits. His face was pale, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wild with panic.

"Clara!" Arthur cried out, stopping short as he saw her sitting across from the federal prosecutor. He turned frantically toward the attorney's desk. "This is a mistake! My wife is suffering from a severe psychological break. She doesn't know what she's doing. She ran away from the hospital with our newborn son!"

Attorney Vance stood up slowly from her desk, her expression chillingly calm. "Mr. Sterling, you are currently standing in a federal prosecutor's office, interrupting an active federal investigation into medical kidnapping and conspiracy. I suggest you sit down and keep quiet, or you will find yourself sharing a holding cell with your mother."

Arthur froze, the words dying in his throat as the terrible reality of the situation finally crashed down upon him. He looked at Clara—not as a compliant asset or a disposable outsider, but as a fierce, unconquerable mother who had outmaneuvered his entire dynasty.

"Where is Eleanor?" Clara asked coldly, her gaze piercing right through him.

"She's... she's downstairs in the lobby," Arthur whispered, his shoulders slumping in absolute defeat as the corporate armor finally shattered around him.
