Chapter 5

The ventilation shaft was a claustrophobic maze of corrugated metal, dust, and flickering shadows. Every movement produced a low, echoing scrape that sounded to Clara’s hyper-sensitive ears like a blaring alarm siren. She propelled herself forward using her knees and forearms, keeping her left arm perpetually locked around Leo to ensure he remained safe from the rough, uneven floor of the duct.

The air inside was stale, smelling of old insulation and copper dust. Clara’s lungs burned, but she kept moving, counting her breaths to keep panic at bay. She remembered the architectural layout of the hospital from her prenatal classes—the east wing connected directly to the old administration building, which had an exterior fire escape leading down to the service alley. If she could reach that wing before dawn, she might just slip out into the gray pre-dawn light undetected.

Beneath her, she could hear faint muffled sounds—the chime of an elevator bell, the squeak of a nurse's rubber-soled shoes on the polished linoleum, the distant drone of a television playing in another patient's room. Each sound served as a terrifying reminder that she was hunting for freedom inside a fortress owned and operated by the very people hunting her down.

A sharp turn in the duct forced her to pause. The metal narrow sharply, pressing against her shoulders and making it difficult to expand her chest for a full breath. Leo shifted slightly, letting out a soft grunt. Clara froze, pressing her face against the cool metal floor of the duct, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs.

"Shh, my love, keep sleeping," she whispered into the dark fabric wrapping her son. Miraculously, the baby quieted down, drifting back into an exhausted slumber.

Through a small slotted junction overhead, Clara caught a glimpse of the hallway she had left behind. Down below, the door to Room 402 had finally been breached. Through the tiny metal slats, she saw two security guards in dark uniforms flanking Eleanor and Arthur as they burst into the empty room.

"She's gone!" Arthur yelled, his calm facade completely shattering into genuine panic. "Check the bathroom!"

Eleanor stood in the center of the room, her face carved from stone. She looked at the hospital gown draped over the shower rod, then down at the open ventilation grille above the toilet. A slow, chilling realization washed over her features, replacing her cold smile with a look of predatory calculation.

"Find her," Eleanor commanded, her voice slicing through the room with absolute authority. "She can't have gone far. Lock down every exit in this hospital. Nobody leaves without my personal authorization."

Clara didn't wait to see more. She pushed herself forward into the narrowing metal tunnel, ignoring the scraping pain on her skin, the burning in her muscles, and the suffocating terror clawing at her throat. She had bought herself a few minutes, but the entire facility was now hunting her and her newborn son.
