Chapter 8 - The Audit

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft pneumatic hiss, breaking the tense silence of the penthouse. Julian and Clara both turned toward the hallway as three men in sharp charcoal suits stepped into the living room, carrying heavy leather briefcases and thick binders labeled with the seal of the New York State Department of Financial Services. Leading the group was a middle-aged woman with steel-gray hair and rimless glasses that gave her an intensely clinical appearance.
“Mr. Vance, I presume?” the woman asked, her voice dry and authoritative, completely ignoring Clara’s presence near the window. “I am Special Agent Vance—no relation, I assure you—with the state asset recovery division. We have an emergency court order to audit all personal holdings, safe deposit boxes, and unrecorded digital assets currently in your possession.”
Julian stared at her in utter disbelief, his hands trembling as he shoved them deep into his pockets. “You have got to be kidding me. I haven’t even had twenty-four hours to consult my legal counsel! My wedding was ruined this afternoon, my life has been upended, and now you’re raiding my home without a warrant?”
“This is a federal and state-sanctioned asset seizure, Mr. Vance,” the agent replied calmly, snapping open her briefcase and pulling out a stack of stamped documents. “When Harry Lockett filed the amended paternity and inheritance charter this morning, it triggered an automatic forensic audit of every transaction associated with Montgomery Vance’s estate over the past thirty years. That includes every trust fund, shell corporation, and luxury acquisition you’ve ever touched.”
Clara watched the exchange with a cold, detached fascination. She slowly unzipped her designer handbag, reached inside, and pulled out a small velvet jewelry box containing her mother’s heirloom earrings. She slipped it into her coat pocket, turned on her heel, and began walking toward the private elevator without saying another word to Julian.
“Clara, wait!” Julian called out, taking a desperate step past the federal auditors. “You can’t just walk out while my entire life is being dismantled piece by piece! We were supposed to be a team!”
Clara stopped just short of the elevator doors, not bothering to turn around. “We were a merger, Julian. And today, the company went bankrupt.”
The elevator doors closed quietly behind her, sealing her fate away from his. Julian stood frozen in the center of his expensive living room, surrounded by state auditors and federal agents who were already unzipping their laptops to begin tearing apart his digital legacy.
Agent Vance didn’t look up from her tablet as she tapped the screen with a manicured fingernail. “Let’s start with the Cayman Islands accounts, Mr. Vance. According to the wire transfers intercepted by Harry Lockett’s legal team this morning, you attempted to move four million dollars out of jurisdiction approximately three hours ago. Where is that money now?”
Julian’s blood ran cold. He hadn’t told a single soul about the Cayman accounts. How could Harry have known about them before the ink on the transfer papers was even dry?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Julian lied, his voice faltering under the weight of the agent’s unblinking gaze.

Agent Vance looked up slowly, a grim smile touching her lips. “Mr. Lockett is currently sitting in your father’s old executive office, Mr. Vance. And he brought his own forensic accountants. They didn’t miss a thing.”
