Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Manhattan

Arthur snatched the parchment directly from Julian’s nerveless fingers, his eyes darting across the faded text with predatory speed. The color quickly drained from the older man’s face, mirroring Julian’s panic. The document was an ironclad, notarized declaration of paternity and estate forfeiture, dated twenty-five years ago, bearing the signature of Julian’s late father, Montgomery Vance. It legally stripped the Vance family name of its primary holdings, transferring ownership to an overlooked heir.

“This is a forgery,” Arthur snarled, though his voice lacked its previous booming confidence. He looked up at the balcony, clutching the paper like a lifeline. “A cheap, fraudulent stunt designed to extort money from a prominent family on their wedding day. Security! Get those people out of my sight!”

“Don’t you dare touch them!” a voice echoed from the gallery.

The woman in white stepped closer to the edge of the balcony, her free hand resting gently on the shoulder of the young girl in the cream dress. The baby in her arms gave a soft, muted cry, a sound that felt entirely out of place amid the high-stakes drama of the cathedral.

“My name is Eleanor Lockett,” the woman announced clearly, her voice cutting through the rising tide of panic. “And that paper in your hand, Arthur, was signed the night Montgomery Vance paid a desperate hush-money fee to hide his oldest son from the world. A son he abandoned so Julian could inherit an empire built on lies.”

Clara staggered backward, her back hitting the edge of a mahogany pew. She looked at Julian, her expression shifting from raw fury to a chilling, hollow numbness. “An empire built on lies? Julian, tell me she’s lying. Tell me your father didn’t steal everything you own—everything we are about to build our lives on.”

Julian couldn’t speak. His throat was constricted, the ghosts of his past finally stepping out of the shadows to tear his immaculate life apart piece by piece. He looked down at the silver locket in his hand, tracing the worn engraving with his thumb. It was the exact mate to the one his father had locked away in the estate safe—a safe Julian had opened with a master key the day his father died.

“I didn’t know about the legal transfer,” Julian finally choked out, his eyes fixed on the marble floor. “I swear to you, Clara, I only found out about Harry’s existence three years ago. By then, the money was tied up, the trusts were formed... I tried to buy them off, I swear I did.”

The cathedral went dead silent. Clara’s father stared at Julian in absolute horror, realizing the financial ruin the revelation implied.

“You tried to buy them off?” Clara whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She reached up, her fingers trembling as she pulled the diamond engagement ring from her finger and dropped it onto the altar. It bounced once, rolling across the stone before coming to a stop near Julian’s polished shoe.

Eleanor watched the ring fall from the balcony, a grim, melancholic smile touching her lips as she adjusted the white blanket around the infant.

“Buying us off didn’t work the first time, Julian, and it won’t work today,” Eleanor said quietly. “Because Harry isn’t just here for the money. He’s here to take back the name you stole.”
