Chapter 6 - The Hostile Takeover

The cream-colored envelope rested beside the glittering diamond engagement ring, two stark symbols of everything Julian Vance had lost in less than ten minutes. The silence in St. Jude Cathedral was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic cooing of the infant on the balcony and the distant wail of a Manhattan siren outside. Arthur Vance slumped heavily into the front pew, clutching his chest as the reality of the corporate dismantling set in. Vance Industries, a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate built over four decades, was about to be legally ripped out of their hands by the very ghosts they thought they had buried forever.
Harry Lockett stepped past Julian, his heavy boots echoing off the marble floor as he walked toward the altar. He picked up the cream envelope, casually sliding a thick sheaf of legal papers out from inside. He didn't bother looking at Julian; his attention was entirely focused on the stunned wedding coordinator and the remaining groomsmen who were nervously hovering near the vestry door.
“Effective as of twelve minutes ago, every corporate asset, offshore account, and real estate holding registered under the Vance name has been frozen by federal injunction,” Harry announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vaulted nave. He turned his slate-gray eyes toward Julian. “Your corporate credit cards are already declined, Julian. Your penthouse at the Park Avenue tower is currently being repossessed by federal marshals. You are, as of right now, legally penniless.”
Julian stared at him, his mind struggling to process the sheer speed of the destruction. “You can’t do that,” Julian said, his voice shaking with a pathetic mix of denial and rage. “The board of directors would never vote for a hostile takeover without a seventy-two-hour notice! I control fifty-one percent of the voting shares!”
“Your father controlled fifty-one percent,” Harry corrected smoothly, holding up a certified stock transfer certificate bearing a newly minted SEC seal. “And upon his death, those shares reverted to the legitimate bloodline under an antiquated family charter that Montgomery was too arrogant to read properly. You were just a warm body keeping the seat warm for the rightful heir.”
From the balcony, Eleanor stepped down the winding stone staircase, holding the sleeping infant securely in one arm while leading the young girl with the other. Her heels clicked softly against the steps, a steady, metronomic countdown to Julian’s complete annihilation. As she reached the main floor, she walked past Julian without even sparing him a glance, stopping beside Harry at the altar.
“Come on, Harry,” Eleanor said softly, adjusting the white blanket around the baby. “We have a board meeting to attend at nine o’clock tomorrow morning. The transition team is already occupying the executive suite.”
Clara watched from the doorway, her heart hammering against her ribs. The man she had planned to marry—the untouchable prince of New York society—was standing in the center of a ruined cathedral, stripped of his name, his money, and his future. She felt a sudden wave of nausea, realizing how close she had come to tying her own legacy to a collapsing foundation.
Julian lunged forward, grabbing Harry by the lapel of his trench coat. “You planned this!” Julian screamed, the veneer of his controlled composure finally shattering completely. “You waited until my wedding day to humiliate me! This was never about the money; it was about revenge!”
Harry didn’t flinch. He slowly reached up, peeled Julian’s white-knuckled fingers off his coat, and adjusted his collar with agonizing calm.

“It’s not revenge, Julian,” Harry whispered, leaning in close so only Julian could hear. “It’s justice. And believe me, we’re only getting started.”
