Chapter 13 - Opening the Vault

The subterranean vault beneath the Vance family estate on Fifth Avenue smelled of cold concrete, aged leather, and decades of suffocating secrecy. The heavy steel door, reinforced with titanium plating and bearing an old mechanical combination lock from the 1990s, stood open. Inside, rows of safety deposit boxes and reinforced metal shelving units stretched back into the dim shadows, illuminated only by the harsh, temporary work lights set up by the federal marshals.
Julian stood before the open vault, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his hands steady despite the sheer weight of what he was about to do. Behind him stood Harry Lockett, Agent Vance from the state asset recovery division, and two armed federal guards. The air in the underground chamber was chilly, making every breath visible in the weak light.
“The main ledger is in safety deposit box 404,” Julian said, his voice echoing hollowly off the stone walls. He reached into his pocket, pulled out an old, heavy brass key—the only physical key his father had left him in his final will—and inserted it into the master cylinder of box 404.
“Turn it,” Harry instructed quietly, standing just over Julian’s shoulder, watching every movement with hawk-like intensity.
Julian twisted the key. A heavy, satisfying mechanical click echoed through the vault as the internal tumblers aligned. He pulled the small steel door open, reaching inside to retrieve a thick, leather-bound ledger whose pages had yellowed with age. The cover bore his grandfather Montgomery’s initials embossed in faded gold leaf.
Agent Vance stepped forward, extending a gloved hand to take the ledger. “Let’s see what else was hidden down here.”
As Agent Vance opened the ledger to the first recorded entry dated thirty years ago, a folded photograph slipped from the binding and fluttered down onto the concrete floor. Julian bent down instinctively, picking it up before the federal agent could grab it.
