Chapter 10 - The Hidden Vault

The mention of Arthur Vance’s name hung in the chilled air of the boardroom like an electric charge. Julian straightened up in his chair, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. His father-in-law—or former father-in-law—was a man of immense caution, a corporate titan who never moved a dollar without triple-checking the legal fallout. For Arthur to initiate an unauthorized wire transfer to Vance Industries meant only one thing: he was either trying to buy his way out of an impending federal indictment, or he was hiding something far more dangerous than stolen corporate shares.
“Put it on the main display,” Harry commanded, not breaking eye contact with Julian.
The massive smart-screen embedded in the wood-paneled wall flickered to life, casting a cold blue glow over the boardroom. Financial transaction lines scrolled rapidly across the display, culminating in a flagged transfer of twelve million dollars originating from a private, unregistered Swiss bank account registered under a shell corporation named A.V. Holdings.
Julian stared at the screen, his mind racing. “That account doesn’t belong to Vance Industries,” Julian murmured, half to himself. “My father never set up an A.V. holding in Switzerland. That’s... that’s Arthur’s private reserve.”
“Correction,” Harry said smoothly, tapping a few keys on his own laptop. “That account was funded thirty years ago using liquid capital siphoned directly from my father’s original trust fund. Arthur Vance wasn’t just your father’s business partner, Julian. He was the architect of the entire cover-up.”
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The foundation of everything he thought he knew about his family, his marriage, and his elite upbringing was fracturing into microscopic dust. Arthur hadn’t just been an opportunistic ally; he had been the mastermind who engineered the theft of the Lockett family fortune, using Montgomery Vance as the public face while he pulled the financial strings from the shadows.
“Search Arthur’s Manhattan estate,” Harry ordered the head of his legal team without raising his voice. “Get a court order for the private vault beneath his study. If twelve million just moved from an old Swiss shell, there’s a paper trail hidden in that house that goes back to the day my grandfather died.”
The lead attorney nodded sharply, pulling out his phone as he hurried out of the boardroom.
Julian sat frozen in his chair, the reality of the grand deception washing over him. He wasn't just a disinherited heir; he was the unwitting pawn in a thirty-year conspiracy orchestrated by the very man he had called family for the past four years. Clara had spent the afternoon looking at him with disgust, believing he was the villain, when in truth, she was the daughter of the primary thief.
“She doesn't know, does she?” Julian asked quietly, his voice devoid of its previous arrogance, sounding suddenly smaller, younger, and utterly defeated.
Harry looked at him, his expression softening by a fraction—not with warmth, but with a cold, piercing understanding. “Clara has lived her entire life inside a gilded cage built on stolen blood and forged documents. What happens when she finds out her father’s entire empire was funded by my grandfather’s ruin?”

Before Harry could elaborate, a sharp knock echoed at the boardroom door, and the door swung open to reveal Clara standing in the threshold, her face pale, holding her own glowing smartphone with a trembling hand.
