Chapter 7 - The Secret Corridor

The pivot wall stopped moving with a heavy thud, leaving a dark, jagged opening that yawned like an open mouth in the basement wall.
Julian stepped back instinctively, raising his phone light to pierce the inky blackness of the hidden passageway.
"Stay behind me," Julian muttered, though his own legs were trembling as he gripped the brass candlestick his mother handed him.
"Be careful what you wish to uncover, Julian," Eleanor murmured, her voice tight with suppressed fear. "Some doors are meant to remain welded shut for all eternity."
Julian took a cautious step across the threshold, his boots crunching on a thick layer of white candle wax that coated the stone floor of the hidden hallway.
The walls on either side were lined not with filing cabinets, but with dozens of small, framed photographs hanging in perfect chronological order.
Julian swept his light across the first frame. It was a picture of a baby wrapped in a dark grey shawl, sleeping peacefully in a wicker basket.
He moved the light to the next frame. A toddler, perhaps two years old, standing on these exact same snowy steps, holding a wooden toy.
And then the next frame. A young girl of seven, wearing a red velvet dress, staring directly into the camera lens with those same pale, unblinking eyes.
"Mom..." Julian breathed out, his hand shaking so violently the flashlight beam danced wildly across the ceiling. "Who took these pictures?"
Eleanor stepped into the corridor behind him, her gaze sweeping over the gallery of stolen moments. When her eyes hit the frame depicting a ten-year-old girl, she stopped dead in her tracks.
"Thomas," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with grief. "Your father didn't destroy them. He kept every single one."
Julian spun around, staring at his mother in absolute confusion. "Thomas? My father died of a heart attack in nineteen-ninety-two! What does he have to do with this girl?"
Eleanor reached out and touched the glass of the frame, leaving a smudge of dust on the surface.
"Your father never wanted to give her up, Julian," Eleanor said softly. "I was the one who signed the papers. I was the one who told the authorities she didn't exist."
Suddenly, the heavy pivot wall behind them began to groan, reversing its motion with terrifying speed.

"Look out!" Julian screamed, diving forward just as the concrete blocks slammed shut, sealing them permanently inside the hidden corridor.
