Chapter 3 - The Echo of a Locked Door

The biting wind howled around the corners of the stone facade, carrying the distant, melancholic sound of a midnight siren.

Julian stared at the rusted iron key lying half-buried in the fresh snow, his breathing coming in shallow, ragged puffs.

"This is insane," Julian muttered, wiping a layer of freezing moisture from his forehead. "We are standing here listening to a homeless child recite ghost stories while our coffee freezes solid."

"Pick it up, Julian," Eleanor commanded, her voice trembling violently as she clutched her beige coat closed at her throat. "Pick up the key right now."

Julian looked at his mother, noting the sheer terror pooling in the corners of her aging eyes—a look he had never seen in all his forty years of life.

"Why are you so afraid of an old basement, Mom?" Julian asked, his voice tightening with suspicion. "What is down there that you've been lying to me about my entire life?"

Eleanor looked away, her gaze fixing on the empty space where the young girl had been standing just seconds before. The girl was gone, vanished completely into the swirling blizzard without leaving a single footprint in the fresh powder.

"There are things in this city that wealthy people pay a lifetime to keep buried," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "Secrets don't rot away just because you throw dirt on top of them."

Julian hesitated, then walked slowly toward the basement door. He brushed the heavy layer of snow off the iron latch with his bare hand, ignoring the searing cold biting into his flesh.

He bent down, picked up the heavy iron key, and stared at the intricate carvings along its shaft—a tiny crescent moon identical to the one the girl had displayed.

"It fits," Julian whispered to himself, his hand shaking as he inserted the cold metal teeth into the keyhole. "It actually fits."

"Don't turn it!" Eleanor cried out, lunging forward to grab his sleeve. "If you open that door, the past comes back to take everything we own!"

Julian paused, the key half-turned in the rusted mechanism, a sickening metallic click echoing through the hollow stone steps beneath their feet.

"It's already open, Mom," Julian said, staring down as the heavy wooden door slowly groaned upward from the inside.
