Chapter 1 - The Weight of Steel and Silver

The bitter wind whipped fresh snow across the granite steps of the Metropolitan Archives, stinging exposed skin with icy needles.

Eleanor Vance knelt on the freezing stone, her beige wool coat dragging in the slush, completely ignoring the damp cold soaking through her tailored slacks.

Her gloved fingers trembled as she held the half-eaten sandwich toward the small, shivering child wrapped in a dark, frayed wool shawl.

Across from her, Julian Vance stood motionless at the top of the landing, steam rising from the two paper cups of black coffee clutched tightly in his numb hands.

His dark overcoat billowed slightly in the gale, his grey vest damp from the swirling flurries.

His eyes darted from the silver crescent moon pendant dangling between the girl’s raw, red fingers back to Eleanor’s ashen face.

"Where are your parents?" Eleanor demanded, her voice cutting through the winter air with an edge of sharp, defensive panic that caught Julian completely off guard.

"Mom, what on earth are you doing down in the dirt?" Julian asked, taking a hasty step forward before slipping slightly on the slick ice.

"Look at her, Julian," Eleanor whispered, her breath frosting in the air as she stared fixedly at the heavy metal piece. "Just look at what she's holding."

Julian squinted through the falling snow, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. "It's just a cheap trinket. A piece of junk some tourist dropped."

"It is not junk!" Eleanor snapped, her voice rising into a sharp, accusatory pitch that echoed off the towering stone pillars. "You know damn well what this is! Don't play stupid with me!"

Julian slammed the coffee cups down onto a stone ledge, the hot liquid splashing against the plastic lids.

"Stop it, Mother! You're losing your mind over a stray kid in the middle of a blizzard!" Julian yelled, his hands balling into fists inside his coat pockets. "We have to call the precinct right now before she freezes to death out here!"

"No police!" Eleanor hissed, grabbing Julian’s wrist with a grip like iron. "If the authorities get involved, everything we built will be torn apart in twenty-four hours!"

The young girl looked up slowly from beneath her dark shawl, her pale blue eyes locking onto Julian with an unsettling, piercing maturity that made his blood run cold.

"You can't call them, mister," the girl whispered, her voice steady and entirely devoid of childhood warmth. "Because my mother is waiting for you in the basement."
