Chapter 2 - Shadows Beneath the Archive

Julian pulled his arm away from his mother's grasp, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"That makes no sense," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as he glanced nervously toward the heavy oak doors of the archive building. "The basement has been sealed by the city for over three decades. Nobody has keys to those locks except the historical board."
Eleanor scrambled to her feet, ignoring the aching joints in her knees, her eyes fixed on the small metal door set low into the foundation beneath the front steps.
"She has the key, Julian," Eleanor murmured, her face drained of all color. "Look at the way she's holding that pendant. It’s the exact duplicate of the one we buried in the family crypt back in nineteen-eighty-four."
The girl stood up smoothly, letting the heavy wool shawl drop from her shoulders to reveal a neatly pressed red velvet dress that looked entirely untouched by the biting snow and mud.
"We didn't bury a body, Eleanor," the girl said softly, taking a deliberate step toward the older woman. "We only buried an empty box filled with heavy rocks to keep the press quiet."
Julian stepped between them, his protective instincts overriding his rising terror.
"Who sent you here?" Julian demanded, grabbing the girl’s thin shoulder. "Who gave you that jewelry? Talk to me right now or I swear I'll drag you inside myself."
The girl didn't flinch. She simply reached into her pocket and pulled out a rusted iron key, holding it up so the sharp edges caught the pale winter light reflecting off the snow.
"The lock hasn't been oiled in forty years, Julian," the girl whispered, her eyes wide and unblinking. "But your mother remembers the sound it makes when the tumbler finally turns."
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, stumbling backward against the stone balustrade.
"Get away from her!" Eleanor screamed, the veneer of her elegant composure entirely shattered. "Julian, grab her arms! Don't let her touch that door!"
Before Julian could react, the girl tossed the iron key across the snowy courtyard. It landed with a dull metallic thud right at the base of the sealed basement entrance.

"Go on, Julian," the girl whispered, stepping back into the shadows of the massive stone pillars. "Go down the stairs and ask the woman in the dark why she left you behind."
