Chapter 15 - The Final Ledger

The crash was monumental—a deafening roar of collapsing stone, splintering oak, and shattering glass that sent a massive plume of white dust billowing high into the freezing winter sky.
Julian shielded his face with his bloodied hands, the shockwave washing over him like a cold tidal wave, until absolute silence finally settled back over the ruined courtyard.
The Metropolitan Archives building was gone, reduced to a jagged mountain of grey rubble and crushed concrete that buried the underground vaults beneath twenty feet of impenetrable debris.
Emergency sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as fire trucks and rescue units swarmed the cordoned-off street.
An EMT rushed over with a thermal blanket, draping it roughly across Julian’s trembling shoulders while checking his pulse and examining the stains on his coat.
"Sir, are you injured? Did anyone else make it out of that building?" the paramedic asked urgently, shining a penlight into Julian's dilated pupils.
Julian sat numbly on the snowy bumper of a police cruiser, staring blankly at the massive pile of rubble where his entire world had just been erased.
"No," Julian whispered, his voice entirely flat and devoid of emotion. "No one else made it out."
The paramedic nodded grimly, signaling for a detective to approach.
A tall man in a dark trench coat walked through the snow, flashing a badge as he approached Julian with a sharp, calculating gaze.
"Detective Vance," the man introduced himself, pulling out a small leather notebook and a pen. "I'm told you were inside the structure when the demolition crew initiated the drop. Care to explain what you were doing unauthorized in a condemned municipal building?"
Julian slowly raised his head, looking past the detective toward the edge of the police tape where a small, dark grey shawl lay half-buried in the fresh snow, fluttering gently in the morning breeze.
Next to the shawl, resting neatly on top of a pristine drift of white powder, was the silver crescent moon necklace pendant, gleaming brightly in the pale winter light without a single speck of dust or blood upon its polished surface.

Julian reached out slowly, picking up the pendant from the snow, and closed his fingers tightly around the cold metal.
"I was just balancing the accounts, Detective," Julian replied quietly, standing up straight as the first warm rays of the morning sun finally broke through the heavy clouds, illuminating the ruins of a dynasty built on lies. "The ledger is closed."
