Chapter 9

The freight elevator jolted to a violent halt, the heavy metal gates sliding open to reveal the dimly lit, opulent hallway of the Elm Terrace estate. The crimson emergency lights from the basement had bled up into the main house, casting long, eerie shadows across the priceless oil paintings and Persian runners.
Director Sterling stepped out first, his service weapon raised, his eyes scanning the corridor with calculated precision. Clara followed closely behind him, her breathing steady, her senses hyper-focused on every creak of the old wooden floorboards.
“Clear,” Sterling muttered, signaling for Clara to keep moving as they approached the heavy oak double doors of her father’s private study.
The study doors stood slightly ajar. A faint, blue glow emanated from the interior, casting long streaks of light across the hallway floor.
Sterling kicked the door open with a heavy boot, sweeping his weapon into the room.
“Federal agents! Don’t move!”
The study was in a state of chaotic devastation. The antique mahogany desk had been shoved violently to the side, and the oil painting that concealed the wall safe lay face down on the Persian carpet, shattered glass crunching underfoot. The wall safe itself stood wide open, its heavy steel door swinging limply on its hinges.
Inside the safe: absolute emptiness.
Clara rushed past Sterling, dropping to her knees in front of the open vault. She reached her hand inside, feeling the cold, bare steel.
“It’s gone,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly as the cold reality set in. “The physical ledger… they took it.”
Sterling cursed under his breath, holstering his weapon and pulling out his radio.
“All units, this is Sterling. The study has been compromised. The primary safe is empty. Lock down the perimeter immediately. No vehicles leave the Elm Terrace grounds!”
Static hissed through the radio, followed by a tense, breathless response. “Director… we have a problem. The security gates have been forced open from the inside. A black town car just broke through the checkpoint heading toward the north highway.”
Sterling slammed his fist against the edge of the mahogany desk. “Who was in the vehicle?”
“We couldn’t see the driver clearly, sir,” the agent replied, sounding panicked. “But surveillance shows Marcus and Hayes running out the back service exit right before the car sped away.”
Clara slowly stood up, her dark eyes reflecting the harsh blue light of the abandoned computer terminal still humming on the desk. She looked down at the keyboard, noticing a flashing text file left open on the screen.

“They didn’t just steal the ledger, Director,” Clara said softly, pointing a steady finger at the monitor. “They left a message.”
Sterling stepped over the shattered glass, leaning down to read the glowing words displayed across the screen in bold, crimson letters: YOU FOUND THE VAULT, BUT YOU LOST THE GAME. MEET US AT THE OLD SHIPYARD AT MIDNIGHT, OR THE LEDGER GOES INTO THE OCEAN.
