Chapter 7

The rhythmic hum of the underground electrical conduits seemed to amplify, pressing down on the narrow corridor with suffocating weight. Clara’s finger hovered over the glowing green enter key of the vault’s control panel. The red countdown timer on the screen blinked mercilessly: 10 MINUTES, 42 SECONDS REMAINING.
Director Sterling and the tactical agents stood back, their weapons lowered, watching her every move with tense anticipation.
“Are you certain about this sequence, Clara?” Sterling asked quietly, his eyes fixed on the blinking red digits. “If Julian altered the master seed, the system will treat this as a hostile breach.”
Clara didn’t hesitate. Her dark hair, slightly damp from the cool subterranean air, clung to the side of her neck near the healing crimson scratch Julian had left her. She pressed her finger down firmly onto the enter key.
For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The keypad remained stubbornly red.
Then, a sharp, electronic chime rang out. The flashing red digits instantly shifted to a brilliant, steady emerald green. ACCESS GRANTED. PRIMARY OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
A series of heavy, mechanical thuds echoed from deep within the titanium door as massive internal locking bolts began to retract one by one. The thick metal slab slowly swung outward, hissing as decades of compressed air and foul gases rushed out into the corridor.
Clara coughed as the haze cleared, stepping immediately over the threshold into the dark chamber beyond.
“Dad!” she called out, swinging her smartphone’s flashlight across the room.
The beam cut through the gloom, revealing banks of silent server racks lining the walls and, slumped against a central control console, the frail, skeletal figure of Arthur Sterling. His silver hair was wild and unkempt, his once-imposing frame shrunken from weeks of starvation and isolation. His eyes fluttered open against the sudden influx of light, squinting weakly at the silhouette of his daughter.
“Clara…?” Arthur rasped, his voice barely a dry whisper. He raised a trembling hand, shielding his eyes. “You… you found the sequence…”
Clara dropped to her knees beside him, wrapping her arms carefully around his frail shoulders, fighting back a surge of overwhelming emotion.
“I found it, Dad. You’re safe now. Julian has been arrested,” she whispered fiercely into his ear, tears finally breaking free and tracking down her cheeks.
Director Sterling stepped into the vault behind her, motioning for the medical team to move in with a stretcher.
“Mr. Sterling, I’m Director Sterling with the Federal Financial Crimes Bureau,” the director introduced himself respectfully, kneeling down beside the older man. “Your nightmare is over. We have your corporate assets secured, and your son-in-law is currently in federal custody.”
Arthur’s cloudy gray eyes shifted toward the federal director, a bitter, knowing smile touching his cracked lips.
“Julian… is a fool,” Arthur whispered, gripping Clara’s wrist with surprising strength. “He thought he stole everything… but he didn’t find the physical ledger. The real evidence… it’s not in the servers.”

Sterling’s expression turned instantly sharp. “What ledger, Mr. Sterling?”
Before Arthur could answer, a loud, ear-piercing siren began to wail throughout the subterranean bunker, drowning out their voices and flashing a blinding crimson warning light across the entire room.
