Chapter 5

The dining room erupted into chaotic motion in less than a heartbeat. As the federal agents lunged forward to secure Julian, his hand whipped out from inside his charcoal suit, clutching a heavy, silver-plated letter opener he had snatched from the sideboard. With a primal yell of absolute desperation, Julian ignored the agents and charged directly toward Clara, his eyes wild with lethal intent.

“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me!” Julian screamed, the silver blade gleaming menacingly in the dim chandelier light.

Clara stood her ground, refusing to flinch, though every instinct screamed at her to run. The sheer speed of the attack left no room for escape.

Before the heavy blade could find its mark, Director Sterling moved with astonishing speed. With a precise, practiced sweep, Sterling intercepted Julian’s arm, twisting it backward with a sharp crack that echoed sickeningly through the room. The silver letter opener clattered uselessly onto the white tablecloth, sinking deep into a leftover plate of roasted pheasant.

Julian let out a sharp cry of agony as the two tactical agents slammed him violently against the mahogany dining table, pressing his face hard into the ruined remains of the dinner. Shards of porcelain cut into his cheek, mirroring the exact injury he had inflicted upon Clara just minutes earlier.

“Cuff him!” Sterling barked, his voice cutting through the room like a razor.

Steel handcuffs clicked sharply into place around Julian’s wrists as he was hauled up roughly by the agents, his tailored suit hopelessly ruined, his dark hair plastered against his sweating forehead with grime and blood.

Eleanor Vance covered her face with trembling hands, weeping softly into the fabric of her elegant beige dress, utterly broken by the violent downfall of her son. Marcus and Hayes kept their heads bowed low, praying that the federal agents would overlook their silent complicity in Julian’s corporate schemes.

Clara watched her husband being dragged toward the mahogany doors, feeling neither joy nor sorrow, only a profound, hollow emptiness.

“You’ll never find him,” Julian snarled over his shoulder, spitting blood onto the Persian rug as the agents dragged him past. “The underground vault has no key! Without the master sequence, he’s already suffocating in the dark!”

The chilling words sent a sudden jolt of pure adrenaline through Clara’s veins. She didn’t wait for Director Sterling to issue orders. She spun around, grabbed her smartphone off the table, and tapped the glowing screen once more.

“Director Sterling,” Clara said urgently, her eyes locking onto the federal agent’s grim expression. “My husband just confirmed what I suspected. My father isn’t dead. He’s locked in the sub-level fallout shelter beneath this estate.”

Sterling’s eyes widened slightly as he grasped the terrifying implications of her words. He gestured sharply to his tactical team.

“Move!” Sterling commanded, drawing his service weapon as he sprinted toward the service corridor. “Find the subterranean access point before the oxygen reserves run out!”

Clara rushed behind them, the red wine stains on the tablecloth blurring past as she chased the federal agents into the dark, labyrinthine hallways beneath Elm Terrace.
