Chapter 14

The cold night air seemed to freeze in Clara’s lungs as the devastating words echoed from the agent’s radio.
“Remote access… to his pacemaker?” Clara whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming dread. She grabbed the edge of Director Sterling’s trench coat, her dark eyes wild with panic. “Get us to the federal medical unit immediately! Someone is trying to finish what Julian started!”
Sterling didn’t hesitate. He dropped the radio into his pocket, his face hardening into a mask of pure fury.
“Move every available unit to the medical sector now!” Sterling roared to his tactical team.
Within minutes, Clara and the director were speeding away from the Elm Terrace estate in the back of an armored federal transport, the siren wailing a mournful, urgent cry through the misty night. Clara stared blankly out the bulletproof window, her mind racing through every face, every name, every betrayal. Julian was in cuffs. Hayes and Marcus were captured. But there was someone else—someone with deep institutional access who had bypassed every security protocol they had put in place.
The transport screeched to a halt outside the heavily fortified federal medical facility. Clara flung the door open before the vehicle had even fully stopped, sprinting through the automatic sliding doors down the sterile white hallway toward Room 402.
She slammed her hands against the glass observation window.
Inside the brightly lit room, Arthur Sterling lay motionless on the hospital bed. The heart monitor beside him was emitting a flat, continuous, agonizing tone. A team of three doctors were frantically administering chest compressions, their faces drenched in sweat.
Standing calmly in the corner of the room, holding a sophisticated cryptographic override tablet connected directly to the hospital’s medical network, was Eleanor Vance.
Clara stumbled backward as the door slid open. Eleanor slowly turned her head, her elegant beige dress immaculate, her diamond necklace sparkling coldly under the harsh fluorescent lights. She didn’t look panicked, nor did she look guilty; her expression was chillingly serene.
“Mother…?” Clara breathed, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.
Eleanor slowly unplugged the cryptographic tablet, slipping it into her designer handbag with delicate, unhurried precision.
“Arthur was always too stubborn to know when to step down, my dear,” Eleanor said smoothly, her voice eerily calm as she stepped past the frantically working doctors toward the exit. “He built an empire on blood and ambition, and he expected Julian to inherit scraps. Someone had to take control of the future.”
Director Sterling burst into the room behind Clara, his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at the older woman.

“Eleanor Vance, drop the device and put your hands where I can see them!” Sterling commanded, his voice shaking with absolute authority.
Eleanor stopped in the doorway, casting one final, pitying glance toward Clara. A strange, haunting smile touched her lips just as she reached her hand inside her handbag to pull out a small, metallic silver object.
