Chapter 13

The sharp click of the detonator’s primary switch echoed loudly over the roar of the overhead helicopter blades. For one agonizing fraction of a second, absolute stillness gripped the north courtyard. Clara braced herself, her eyes locked onto Hayes’s manic face.

Then, a dull, subterranean thud vibrated through the cobblestones beneath their feet.

Instead of the catastrophic explosion Hayes had anticipated, a series of small, contained puffs of gray smoke erupted harmlessly from the decorative planters lining the estate gates. The secondary perimeter charges had been remotely neutralized by the federal tech team three minutes prior.

Hayes stared at the smoking planters in utter disbelief, his finger still pressed down on the dead detonator.

“No… that’s impossible… I coded the frequency myself!” Hayes stammered, his face draining of all color as he realized his leverage had completely vanished.

Before Hayes could react further, Director Sterling and three tactical agents dropped swiftly from the sides of the hovering helicopter on fast-ropes, landing with heavy thuds on the cobblestones surrounding him. Before Hayes could even draw the concealed pistol from his tuxedo jacket, two agents slammed him violently against the damp stone wall, ripping the detonator from his grip and clicking steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.

“Secure the suspect!” Sterling ordered sharply, stepping forward through the dissipating fog. He turned his attention to Clara, who stood completely unharmed amid the swirling mist. “Are you alright, Clara?”

Clara slowly exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, nodding once.

“I’m fine, Director,” Clara replied steadily. “What about Marcus? Did our interception unit reach the bay?”

Sterling pulled his encrypted tablet from his trench coat, checking a live tactical feed sent from the state police units stationed along the harbor. A grim satisfaction touched the corners of his mouth.

“State police intercepted Marcus’s town car right as it reached the municipal docks,” Sterling reported smoothly. “The physical ledger was recovered intact from the back seat. Not a single page missing.”

Clara felt a profound wave of relief wash over her. The dark nightmare that had suffocated the Elm Terrace estate for months was finally coming to an end. Her father’s legacy was safe, and the men who had sought to destroy it were facing absolute justice.

Just as Sterling turned to order the transport of the prisoners, one of the tactical agents rushed over from the estate gates, clutching a vibrating radio receiver with a frantic expression.

“Director, you need to hear this,” the agent panted, holding out the device. “It’s an emergency patch from the federal medical unit holding Arthur Sterling.”

Sterling took the radio, pressing it tightly to his ear. “Sterling here. Report.”

The agent on the other end gasped for air, speaking with panicked urgency. “Sir… Mr. Sterling just flatlined. And the medical monitor shows someone remotely accessed his pacemaker from an outside frequency.”

Clara’s blood ran ice-cold as she overheard the words, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she realized the true mastermind was still moving in the shadows.
