Chapter 9: The Boardroom Showdown

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Vance Global headquarters was bathed in the harsh, clinical light of an overcast Manhattan morning. The massive mahogany conference table, polished to a mirror shine, was surrounded by twelve members of the board of directors, all sitting in grim, synchronized silence. At the head of the table sat Julian, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back, flanked by two towering private security guards. Beatrice sat directly across from him, wearing her immaculate cream pantsuit, calmly sipping black coffee from a bone-china cup.
The digital clock on the wall blinked 6:58 AM. Two minutes until the scheduled execution of the master acquisition contract.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Beatrice began, her voice smooth, melodic, and projecting absolute authority across the silent room. "We are gathered here today to finalize the historical merger of Vance Global Enterprises and the Engent technology infrastructure. Unfortunately, as you can see, our CEO, Mr. Julian Vance, has suffered a severe psychological episode overnight, resulting in erratic, paranoid behavior and unauthorized attempts to breach our secure sub-level archives."
Several board members murmured anxiously, casting sideways glances at Julian. Arthur Sterling, the elderly senior board member who had served alongside Julian’s father, adjusted his spectacles, his face etched with deep concern.
"Julian, is this true?" Sterling asked, leaning forward. "Beatrice tells us you attempted to tamper with the company’s core financial servers at dawn."
Julian raised his head, his eyes burning with fierce determination. He didn't look at the handcuffs; he looked directly into the eyes of the men and women who had trusted him for a decade.
"It’s a lie, Arthur," Julian said, his voice steady, carrying a calm authority that commanded the room. "Beatrice and a faction within this board engineered the Engent acquisition not as a merger, but as a systematic liquidation. The software contains a hidden backdoor designed to siphon every offshore account we hold the second this contract is signed, while framing me for corporate embezzlement."
A sharp wave of shock rippled through the boardroom. Beatrice’s coffee cup clicked sharply against its saucer as she set it down, her smile vanishing into a cold, hard line.
"He is clearly delusional," Beatrice said, her voice sharp with feigned pity. "The stress of the acquisition has caused a complete break from reality. Guards, present the final contract for his biometric signature. We are not delaying the merger for a man experiencing a psychotic break."
One of the security guards stepped forward, placing a heavy digital tablet onto the table directly in front of Julian. The screen glowed brightly, displaying the final signature block alongside a biometric scanner pad.

"Sign it, Julian," Beatrice whispered across the table, her eyes narrowing into cold daggers. "It’s over."
Julian looked down at the tablet, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew that the moment his thumb touched that glass pad, the automated code would execute, locking him out forever. But as he looked up, he saw the heavy oak doors of the boardroom slowly swing open.
