Chapter 12: The Quiet Aftermath

By mid-afternoon, the executive boardroom had emptied out, leaving only an eerie, echoing silence behind. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows offered a view of Manhattan bathed in the pale, indifferent light of a clearing afternoon storm. Julian stood alone by the glass, holding a cold cup of black coffee, watching the ceaseless flow of traffic crawling across the bridge far below. The adrenaline that had sustained him through forty-eight hours of terror, sleeplessness, and confrontation had finally evaporated, leaving behind a profound, hollow exhaustion in its wake.
The door clicked open softly, and Marcus stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder containing the preliminary federal asset-recovery reports.
"The SEC has fully uncoupled our primary operational servers from the Engent network," Marcus said quietly, walking over and placing the folder on the corner of the mahogany table. "The backdoor code was isolated and quarantined less than an hour ago. Your offshore accounts are safe, Julian. Vance Global is officially secure."
Julian didn't turn around immediately. He stared at his own reflection in the double-paned glass, watching the faint lines of stress etched around his eyes. "It was so close, Marcus. If I had slept five more minutes last night... if I hadn't gone down to that kitchen..."
"But you did," Marcus interrupted gently, clapping a heavy hand onto his younger brother's shoulder. "You listened to your instincts. And you listened to Chloe."
Julian turned around, a faint, genuine smile finally touching the corners of his mouth. "Speaking of Chloe—what happened with her manager? When the federal raid hit the restaurant this morning, I was worried they would retaliate against her for leaking the information."
Marcus smiled, pulling a small business card from his pocket and handing it to Julian. "Don't worry about Chloe. I had the SEC legal team place her under federal witness protection protocols temporarily just in case Beatrice's associates tried anything. Furthermore, we’ve offered her a full-ride scholarship to complete her business degree at NYU, starting this fall, along with a senior security liaison position here at Vance Global once she graduates."
Julian looked down at the card, feeling a deep, profound sense of relief wash over him. "She saved the entire company. It’s the least we could do."
May you like
"Indeed it is," Marcus agreed, looking around the empty boardroom. "Now, what are your plans for the rest of the day? You look like you haven't slept in a week."
"I’m going to go down to that diner," Julian said softly, buttoning his pinstripe jacket and picking up his coat. "There’s a waitress I need to thank properly."
