Chapter 13: Returning to the Scene

The diner was quiet in the mid-afternoon lull between the lunch rush and the evening dinner shift. The soft hum of the neon 'Open' sign buzzed against the windowpane, casting a warm, familiar red glow across the worn linoleum floor. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and toasted sourdough hung heavily in the air, a stark, comforting contrast to the sterile, high-stakes environment of the corporate boardroom Julian had just left behind.
Julian pushed open the glass door, the familiar small brass bell chiming softly overhead. He walked slowly toward the back corner booth—the exact table where he and Beatrice had sat less than twenty-four hours ago, where the entire nightmare had begun with a folded white napkin and five handwritten words: Trap. Don't use engent.
Chloe was wiping down the counter near the register, her blonde hair pulled back in the same familiar ponytail, wearing her dark red apron over her white button-down shirt. When she looked up and saw Julian standing by the doorway, her hands froze on the dish towel. For a second, a look of sheer panic flashed across her face, as if she feared the federal fallout had somehow come back to consume her.
Julian raised his hands open and empty, offering a warm, reassuring smile that reached his eyes for the first time in months. He walked slowly toward her, stopping a few feet away from the counter.
"Hi, Chloe," Julian said softly, his voice gentle and devoid of corporate authority.
Chloe let out a long, shaky breath, lowering the towel onto the counter. "Mr. Vance. I... I saw the news updates on the breakroom television. Is it really over?"
"It’s over," Julian replied, nodding slowly. "Beatrice is in federal custody, the Engent backdoor has been permanently neutralized, and Vance Global is safe. Because of you."
Chloe looked down at her hands, a flush of color rising in her cheeks. "I was terrified, Mr. Vance. If my manager or anyone from her circle had found out I slipped you that note, I wouldn't be standing here right now."
"You risked everything to do the right thing," Julian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, heavy envelope embossed with the Vance Global crest. He slid it across the clean laminate counter toward her. "My brother told me about your scholarship offer. But I wanted to deliver this personally."
Chloe picked up the envelope, her fingers trembling slightly as she lifted the flap. Inside was not just a scholarship document, but a guaranteed position as the head of corporate compliance at Vance Global once she completed her degree, backed by a personal endorsement from the CEO himself.
Tears welled up in Chloe’s eyes, but she blinked them back quickly, maintaining her composure with a quiet, dignified grace that reminded Julian remarkably of his own survival instinct.

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I won't let you down."
"I know you won't, Chloe," Julian replied softly. "You never did."
