Chapter 7: The Ghost in the Machine

The green blinking cursor on the vault terminal seemed to mock Julian’s frantic desperation. ENTER MASTER DECRYPTION PHRASE. He hammered his palms lightly against the stainless steel desk, his breath coming in ragged gasps as the seconds ticked away on his watch. 4:21 AM. If he couldn't extract the unencrypted ledgers before the morning shift change at five, the security system would automatically reset the analog breaker switch he had flipped in the breakroom, locking the vault permanently and alerting Beatrice’s private security detail.

He didn't know the phrase. Beatrice had undoubtedly chosen something impossibly complex, rooted in corporate mythology or personal malice. He began typing frantic, desperate guesses onto the keyboard: VANCEGLOBAL2024, ENGENT_SECURE, GOLDEN_GOLD, LIQUIDATION.

Each attempt was met with a harsh, red flashing error message: ACCESS DENIED. ATTEMPT 1 OF 3 BEFORE SYSTEM WIPE.

Julian stopped cold. The system wipe feature meant that one more wrong guess would permanently format the drive, erasing every shred of digital evidence of the conspiracy and leaving him completely defenseless against the embezzlement charges. He pulled his hands away from the keyboard, staring at the flashing red light as if it were a physical threat.

Think, he told himself, closing his eyes and forcing his racing heart to slow down. Beatrice doesn't use random corporate passwords. She’s arrogant. She leaves her signature on everything she touches.

He remembered the dark red evening gown she wore at dinner. He remembered the name of her racehorse that had won the Belmont Stakes three years ago. He remembered her mother’s maiden name inscribed on the family mausoleum upstate.

With trembling fingers, Julian typed out seven letters, lowercase, exactly as she signed her personal notes: rosemary.

He hit the Enter key.

The red flashing error light instantly vanished. The screen flickered, shifting from angry crimson to a cool, clinical emerald green. A progress bar materialized across the center of the monitor: DOWNLOADING MASTER LEDGER – 12%... 45%... 89%... COMPLETE.

Julian let out a ragged breath that sounded almost like a sob of relief as the USB drive began pulsing with a steady blue light. He reached down, ejected the drive, and clutched it in his palm like a sacred relic. He had the proof. He had the undeniable digital trail showing that Beatrice and a coalition of rogue board members had systematically gutted Vance Global's subsidiaries to finance the hostile takeover using Engent as a financial Trojan horse.

Suddenly, the harsh wail of an alarm klaxon pierced the silent vault. Overhead, emergency strobe lights flashed a blinding red.

Julian didn't hesitate. He spun around, sprinted out of the server enclosure, and threw his weight against the heavy titanium vault door just as the pneumatic locks began to hiss back into place.
