Chapter 8: The Morning Ambush

Julian burst through the service exit of the sub-level parking garage into the crisp, biting air of the early dawn. The sky over the Manhattan skyline was painted in bruised shades of purple and charcoal, signaling the arrival of a grey, unforgiving morning. He clutched the encrypted USB drive in his coat pocket, his legs aching from the physical toll of the night, but his mind was burning with fierce, razor-sharp clarity. He had the evidence. Now he needed to get it into the hands of federal authorities before the seven o'clock board meeting.

He pulled out the burner phone Marcus had provided and dialed his brother’s secure line. It picked up on the first ring.

"Marcus, I got the drive. The unencrypted ledgers are in my hand," Julian said rapidly, scanning the empty street for any sign of surveillance vehicles.

"Incredible," Marcus replied, his voice tight with tension. "Where are you? I have an agent from the SEC waiting at my apartment downtown. If you bring the drive here right now, we can intercept the board meeting digitally and slap them with a federal injunction before you even walk into the boardroom."

"I'm heading toward the subway entrance on Lexi—"

Before Julian could finish the sentence, a sleek black town car rounded the corner at high speed, its tires screeching against the asphalt as it mounted the curb and cut off his path. The passenger door swung open with brutal force, and two burly men in identical charcoal suits stepped out, blocking his exit.

Julian spun around to run back toward the alley, but another black sedan blocked the rear exit. He was entirely cornered.

The rear window of the lead vehicle rolled down smoothly. Beatrice sat inside, perfectly poised, wearing a tailored cream-colored pantsuit that looked immaculate despite the early hour. She wasn't smiling now; her expression was a mask of cold, calculating fury.

"Going somewhere, darling?" Beatrice asked, her voice carrying effortlessly across the damp pavement. "It’s very rude to skip out on breakfast before such an important day."

Julian instinctively pressed his hand against the USB drive in his coat pocket, stepping backward until his spine hit the brick wall of the building. "It's over, Beatrice. I know about the backdoor in Engent. I know about the shell corporations. I have the files."

Beatrice sighed softly, stepping out of the town car with terrifying elegance. She walked slowly toward him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete.

"You always were entirely too clever for your own good, Julian," she said, stopping a few feet away from him. The two security guards closed in, positioning themselves on either side of him. "Did you really think I didn't monitor the analog overrides in the sub-level? The moment you plugged that drive into the vault terminal, the system flagged your IP address. You walked right into the trap."

She raised her hand, and one of the guards stepped forward, slamming a heavy set of handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists before he had a chance to react.
