Chapter 5: The Ignition

A harsh hiss cut through the damp air of the parking garage as a concentrated stream of crimson pepper spray caught Todd squarely in the eyes. He stumbled backward with a muffled curse, dropping his hands to his face as a searing burn blinded him instantly. He collided heavily with the side of a parked SUV, sliding down the metal door into a heap on the oil-stained concrete, coughing and gasping for air.

Elena did not wait to see if he recovered. She lunged forward, pressing the key fob again to pop the driver’s door open. She bundled the voluminous layers of her wedding dress awkwardly into the driver’s seat, sliding behind the steering wheel and slamming the door shut with a satisfying thud. Her hands shook violently as she pushed the key into the ignition and turned it. The engine roared to life, the dashboard instruments glowing with familiar green light.

From down the aisle, David’s voice echoed angrily as he rounded the corner. "Todd? What the hell happened? Todd!"

David caught sight of his partner slumped against the SUV and then saw Elena’s car reversing rapidly out of the parking space, tires screeching against the concrete. David sprinted forward, waving his arms, shouting for her to stop, but the sedan surged ahead, kicking up a small cloud of dust and exhaust fumes. Elena shifted the gear into drive, slammed her foot on the accelerator, and aimed the vehicle straight toward the concrete ramp leading up to the street level.

The car burst out from the underground garage into the rainy night, the sudden rush of cool, wet air washing over the windshield as the automated security gate swung open just in time. Elena turned the steering wheel sharply onto the rain-slicked boulevard, blending into the sparse late-night traffic of the downtown district.

Inside the car, the dashboard clock read 11:15 PM. She had officially been married for less than two hours, and she was already a fugitive from the man she had promised to cherish.

Her phone buzzed loudly in the passenger seat, illuminating the dashboard with an incoming call from an unknown number. Elena glanced down at the screen. It wasn’t Julian. It was a secure encrypted messaging app pinging with a single incoming file from an anonymous sender labeled: Phase Two: The Witness.

Her pulse raced as she tapped the screen with one finger while keeping her eyes glued to the slick road ahead. The file contained an audio recording dated three days prior—a conversation between Julian and a federal prosecutor who had mysteriously dropped an investigation into his firm. The voice belonging to the prosecutor was crisp, steady, and unmistakably corrupt.

Elena gripped the steering wheel tighter, her knuckles white. Julian hadn't just embezzled funds from elderly clients; he had built an insurance policy of compromised officials across the entire municipal government. To take him down, she wouldn't just need the financial records in the manila folder. She would need to dismantle an entire network of powerful men who considered themselves untouchable.
