Chapter 11: The Air-Gapped Terminal

The heavy metal door swung inward, revealing a dimly lit concrete stairwell that descended deep into the subterranean bowels of the courthouse. The air grew noticeably cooler, smelling of old paper, floor wax, and ozone from electrical transformers. Elena pulled a small penlight from her pocket, its narrow beam cutting through the gloom as she descended the steps one by one, her rubber-soled boots making almost no sound against the concrete.

At the bottom of the stairwell lay a long, sterile hallway lined with rows of locked steel storage cages filled with decades of municipal records, court transcripts, and tax rolls. At the very end of the hall stood Room 104—the secure data archive housing the air-gapped Department of Justice terminal.

Elena tried the brass doorknob. It turned smoothly without resistance.

She slipped inside, closing the door quietly behind her. The room was small, dominated by a heavy oak desk supporting an older model military-grade workstation wired directly into a thick orange fiber-optic cable running straight into the reinforced concrete wall. A green indicator light flickered rhythmically on the modem box, signaling an active, unbroken line to the federal mainframe downtown.

Elena sat down in the swivel chair, her heart hammering against her ribs as she pulled the encrypted flash drive from her pocket and inserted it into the workstation's USB port. The monitor flickered, a black command-prompt window opening automatically to scan the inserted media.

Initializing secure transfer protocol…

Target directory: DOJ_CRIMINAL_DIV_SECURE.

Lines of code began scrolling down the screen at a dizzying speed. Financial records, shell company deeds, offshore wire confirmations, and audio logs poured into the federal database in a matter of seconds. The progress bar crept steadily across the monitor: 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%...

Suddenly, a loud klaxon alarm blared through the building's ventilation shafts, followed by a harsh robotic voice over the PA system: Unauthorized network access detected in Sub-Level Archive. Security lockdown initiated.

Elena froze. The screen flashed a brilliant warning red: TRACING IP ROUTE... FIREWALL BREACH DETECTED.

Julian’s corporate hackers had found the ping. Even though the terminal was air-gapped, the sudden spike in data volume had triggered an automated diagnostic alert across the municipal network server that instantly notified Julian’s private security firm.

The heavy wooden door of Room 104 rattled violently as someone slammed their weight against it from the outside.

"Open the door! Federal warrant!" a gruff voice shouted, though the tone sounded corporate rather than law enforcement.

Elena watched the progress bar hit 99%... 100%. Transfer complete.
