Chapter 4: Descent into the Sub-Level

The service elevator moved downward with a low, mechanical hum, sealing Elena inside a narrow box of brushed steel. The digital floor indicator ticked downward: P1, P2, Sub-Level 3. The air grew cooler and smelled faintly of exhaust fumes and damp concrete. When the doors slid open with a sharp chime, the underground parking garage stretched out before her like a concrete labyrinth, dimly lit by flickering fluorescent tubes that buzzed overhead.
Elena clutched the manila folder tightly against her chest, her wedding gown gathered in one hand to keep the pristine fabric from dragging on the oil-stained floor. Her heels clicked sharply against the pavement, echoing through the cavernous space. Row after row of luxury sedans and SUVs stood in the shadows, their polished paint reflecting the harsh overhead lights. Her vintage blue sedan was parked in the far corner, tucked away near the maintenance exit—a deliberate choice she had made hours before the ceremony.
Footsteps echoed behind her, fast and heavy.
Elena did not look back; she increased her pace, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The heavy silk of her dress restricted her stride, making escape feel agonizingly slow.
"Elena! Wait up!" David’s voice called out from the darkness near the elevator bank. His footsteps grew louder, slapping rapidly against the concrete. "Julian wants to talk. Just give us the folder, and nobody has to get hurt."
Elena rounded the corner of a large concrete pillar, sliding into the narrow aisle where her car sat waiting. Her fingers fumbled in her pocket for the electronic key fob. The panic was a tangible weight in her throat, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She pressed the unlock button, and the sedan's headlights flashed a welcoming double-blink in the dimness.
Before she could pull the driver’s side door open, a dark figure stepped out from the shadows beside the vehicle, blocking her path. It was Todd, breathing heavily, a grim smile plastered across his face. He had taken the stairwell down while she took the elevator, cutting off her escape route.
"End of the line, Elena," Todd said, holding out his hand expectantly. "Hand over the papers. You can’t drive away in a wedding dress anyway. You’ll ruin the upholstery."
Elena stopped three paces away from him. She kept the manila folder clutched securely under her left arm, while her right hand slipped deep into the pocket of her hidden bridal petticoat, closing around a heavy can of industrial-strength pepper spray she had thoughtfully pocketed before walking down the aisle.

"You think Julian is going to protect you when the federal indictments drop?" Elena asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears. "He’s already drafting a statement blaming the entire operation on his associates. Your name is at the top of the list, Todd. Not his."
Todd hesitated, his hand pausing mid-air. The doubt flickered in his eyes for a crucial second—just long enough for Elena to pull the canister from her pocket and press the trigger.
