Chapter 12: The Collapse of the Crown

With a deafening crash, the wooden door of Room 104 splintered inward as two men in dark tactical suits forced the lock, stumbling into the small archive room. Their faces were grim, their dark jackets bearing the discreet embroidered logo of Julian’s private security contractor.

Elena stood up sharply from the desk, her chair rolling backward and colliding with a stack of cardboard storage boxes. She kept her hands raised in plain sight, her breathing controlled, her eyes fixed on the lead operative who stepped forward with a plastic zip-tie cuff already in hand.

"Step away from the terminal, Mrs. Vance," the lead operative growled, reaching out to grab her wrist. "You're coming with us. Mr. Vance wants a word before the federal marshals arrive."

"You're too late," Elena said, her voice ringing out with absolute clarity in the confined space. She pointed a finger toward the monitor, where the screen displayed a bright green confirmation box: DATA UPLOAD SUCCESSFUL. CASE FILE TRANSMITTED TO US DISTRICT ATTORNEY.

The operative stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the screen in disbelief. He dropped his hand from her wrist, pulling a secure radio from his tactical vest. "Command, this is Team Alpha. She transmitted the files. The archive terminal was compromised. I repeat, the files are gone."

Before the voice on the other end of the radio could respond, the heavy steel security doors at the end of the hallway echoed with a series of loud, authoritative knocks, followed by the unmistakable sound of booted feet swarming the corridor.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons!" a deep voice commanded from the hallway.

The two private operatives exchanged a panicked glance. They were caught in the act of detaining a citizen inside a secure government facility during an active federal investigation. The corporate shield they had relied upon evaporated instantly. The lead operative slowly raised his hands, letting his radio slip from his fingers onto the concrete floor as three armed FBI agents in tactical vests poured into the room, weapons drawn.

"Hands on your head! Down on the knees!" an agent barked, moving swiftly to secure the operatives.

Another agent stepped past the commotion, walking directly up to Elena. He looked at her with a mix of professional curiosity and respect. "Are you Elena Vance?"

"Yes," she replied steadily, lowering her hands.

"We've been receiving a massive data dump originating from this terminal," the agent said, glancing at the monitor. "The U.S. Attorney’s office has already issued an immediate arrest warrant for Julian Vance on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and public corruption."
