Chapter 3: The First Defection

The heavy oak doors of the Grandview banquet hall opened slightly, letting in a draft of cold autumn air that made the white roses on the table shiver. Elena stood up slowly from her chair, the yards of silk and tulle rustling softly against the carpet. The movement caught the attention of several guests seated near the front, who turned their heads in mild curiosity, expecting the couple to take the floor for their first dance.

Julian reacted instantly, his arm shooting out to gently grasp her wrist. His grip was firm, not quite bruising, but unmistakably controlling. "Sit down, Elena," he commanded through a frozen, camera-ready smile. "Do not make a spectacle of yourself. Think of my mother sitting at table four. Think of what this will do to her heart."

"You should have thought of her heart before you looted the retirement accounts of her own bridge club friends," Elena said, her voice devoid of hesitation. She twisted her wrist with a sharp, unexpected torque, breaking free from his grasp. She did not run; running was for the guilty. She walked with measured, deliberate steps away from the wedding table, leaving her white veil trailing slightly behind her on the floor.

Marcus intercepted her before she reached the center aisle. He stepped into her path, his broad shoulders blocking her route to the exit, his expression a mask of practiced politeness. "Excuse me, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, using her new last name with a subtle, menacing emphasis. "The groom would prefer if you returned to your seat. The photographer is waiting to capture the cake-cutting ceremony."

"Move, Marcus," Elena said, looking directly into his eyes without flinching. She knew Marcus managed Julian’s private security detail; she also knew he had signed off on several of the questionable logistics shipments detailed in the folder. "Unless you want to explain to the state troopers why your name is listed as a secondary signatory on the warehouse leases."

Marcus blinked, the color draining from his tanned face. The casual authority vanished from his posture. He slowly stepped aside, offering no further resistance as Elena brushed past him. The realization that she knew far more than just the financial details hit the groomsmen like a physical blow. They watched in stunned silence as the bride bypassed the exit and headed straight toward the back service elevators that led down to the underground parking garage.

Julian remained frozen at the table, his eyes tracking her every movement. He knew the police would not be far behind if she reached her car and accessed the encrypted backup server in the glove compartment. He turned to David and Todd, his voice a sharp hiss. "Go after her. Do not let her reach the vehicle. Use whatever excuse you need, but bring back that folder."
