Chapter 9: Confrontation in the Study

Julian pressed his back firmly against the heavy metal door of the wall safe, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The cold barrel of Deputy Vance’s service revolver looked impossibly large in the dim light of the study. Outside, lightning flashed across the windowpanes, followed immediately by a sharp roll of thunder that rattled the glass in its wooden frame.
"Where is she?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly despite his desperate effort to sound brave. "What did you do to my mother?"
Vance offered a grim, humorless smile, keeping the gun locked steadily on Julian's chest. "She’s alive, for now, Julian. If I wanted her dead, I wouldn't have bothered dragging her out into the woods behind your fancy wedding venue. But she knows things she shouldn't. Just like she knew thirty years ago when she destroyed my family's livelihood out of some misplaced sense of bureaucratic righteousness."
"You lost your job because you were corrupt, Vance! It was right there in the reports!" Julian yelled, gesturing wildly toward the hidden safe behind him. "And now you're going to throw away whatever is left of your life over a petty grudge from the last century?"
"Corrupt?" Vance’s eyes flashed with sudden, intense anger, the veneer of calm slipping for a fraction of a second. "I was protecting what was mine. Your mother didn't just ruin my career; she ruined my entire future. She thought she could bury me, walk away, and live a peaceful life while I watched everything crumble. Well, karma has a funny way of circling back around. And tonight, on the happiest day of your life, I’m going to make sure you understand what it feels like to lose everything."
Julian’s mind raced desperately, searching for an opening, a distraction, any way to disarm the veteran officer. "Clara knows I came here," Julian lied smoothly, forcing confidence into his tone. "The state police were already notified of my suspicions before I left the venue. If anything happens to me, you won't make it twenty miles out of this county before they surround you."
Vance chuckled darkly, shaking his head. "You think I didn't think of that? While you were driving here, I redirected the county dispatch. Your bride and her mother are currently sitting in an empty room at the reception hall with their phones confiscated by my deputies, waiting for a husband who isn't coming back."

The blood rushed out of Julian’s face. Clara. He had left her vulnerable back at the barn, completely unaware that the entire local police force had been subverted by Vance's corrupt network. The realization hit him like a physical blow. He couldn't just think about saving his mother anymore; he had to find a way to break out of this room and get back to his bride before Vance’s accomplices executed the next phase of their vicious retribution.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Julian lunged sideways, grabbing a heavy brass desk lamp and hurling it directly at Vance’s face just as he lunged forward to close the distance.
