Chapter 11: Return to the Barn

The drive back to the Valley View Barn felt like an eternity through the blinding sheets of rain and midnight darkness. Julian’s left ankle throbbed mercilessly with every press of the gas pedal, but sheer terror for Clara’s safety kept him focused. As he finally crested the hill overlooking the valley, his heart sank. The festive fairy lights that had once illuminated the rustic wooden venue were completely extinguished, plunging the entire property into an eerie, unnatural shadow. Only the flashing blue and red strobes of a single parked sheriff's cruiser cut through the gloom.
Julian killed his headlights a hundred yards down the drive, coasting the car onto the grass near the tree line to avoid drawing immediate attention from Vance’s corrupt deputies. He cut the engine, grabbed a heavy wooden tire iron from his trunk for makeshift defense, and limped silently through the wet brush toward the rear service entrance of the barn.
The heavy wooden doors were unlocked—left ajar intentionally. Julian slipped inside the darkened reception hall. The scene was surreal. The elegant tables adorned with white lace tablecloths and floral centerpieces now stood completely abandoned. The children’s table with its scattered wooden toys looked pitifully small in the center of the vast, empty room.
"Clara?" Julian called out in a sharp, urgent whisper, his voice echoing off the high timber beams.
A muffled sound came from the direction of the bridal suite near the back of the hall. Julian limped rapidly toward the heavy oak door, gripped the brass handle, and threw it open. Clara and Martha were tied securely to wooden chairs with heavy zip ties, their mouths gagged with duct tape. Clara’s eyes widened with overwhelming relief when she saw Julian standing in the doorway, tears streaming down her pale cheeks over her ruined white lace dress.
Julian rushed forward, dropping the tire iron with a heavy clatter, and immediately began tearing the duct tape from Clara’s mouth. "Are you alright? Did they hurt you?" he asked frantically, his fingers working desperately at the tight plastic restraints around her wrists.

"Julian, thank God," Clara sobbed softly as the tape came free, gasping for air. "Two deputies came in right after you left, saying we had to evacuate for a security sweep. They locked us in here and tied us up when we tried to refuse. They said Deputy Vance is coming back here with your mother."
Before Julian could answer, the front doors of the barn creaked open with a loud, ominous groan. Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor, accompanied by the cold, calculated laugh of Deputy Vance, who stepped into the darkened main hall with his service revolver raised, flanked by two armed accomplices in uniform.
