Chapter 8: The Hidden Past

The papers fluttered slightly in the draft from the hallway vent as Julian stared down at the photograph resting on top of the stack inside the open safe. The man in the faded polaroid picture had sharp features, piercing eyes, and a confident smirk that sent an immediate jolt of recognition through Julian's nervous system. It was Deputy Vance—the very same police officer who had responded to their emergency call at the Valley View Barn less than an hour ago.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He pulled the documents closer under the harsh desk lamp, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon of restraining orders, property disputes, and police internal affairs reports dating back twenty-five years. According to the yellowed news clippings tucked between the pages, Arthur Vance had been involved in a contentious land acquisition scandal in the county, a scheme that Evelyn—then working as a municipal zoning auditor—had actively investigated and ultimately dismantled, leading to Vance's suspension from the force and the ruin of his family's local business empire.

A horrifying puzzle began to piece itself together in Julian’s mind. Vance hadn't just coincidentally responded to the wedding dispatch; he had intercepted the call, positioned himself at the scene of the crime, and taken charge of the investigation to control the narrative and cover his tracks. The blood on the trail, the missing phone, the forced abduction—it wasn't the work of a random criminal. It was a calculated act of revenge executed by a corrupt cop who had waited a quarter of a century to settle an old score.

Julian grabbed his phone, his hands trembling violently as he dialed the emergency line again, intending to report the incredible conflict of interest to the state police. But before the call could even connect, a heavy creak echoed from downstairs. The front door had opened and clicked shut.

Julian froze, holding his breath as footsteps—slow, deliberate, and heavy—began to ascend the wooden staircase. There was no time to escape through the second-story window; the drop was too steep, and the storm outside was raging at full fury. He dropped the documents back into the safe, slammed the heavy metal door shut, and spun around just as a flashlight beam cut through the shadows of the study doorway.

Deputy Vance stepped into the room, his uniform jacket soaked with rain, his service revolver drawn and pointed with terrifying steadiness directly at Julian’s chest. The friendly, professional facade of the local cop was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, remorseless glare that matched the chilling history locked inside the safe behind Julian.

"I figured you’d come straight here, boy," Vance said, his voice low and eerily calm as he stepped further into the study, blocking the only exit. "Your mother always was entirely too predictable when it came to protecting her family's secrets."
