Chapter 12: The Final Stand

Deputy Vance stepped into the amber light of a single emergency exit sign, his revolver leveled steadily at Julian, who stood defensively in front of Clara and Martha. The two corrupt officers flanking him spread out, blocking both exits from the bridal suite, trapping them completely.
"I have to hand it to you, Julian," Vance said, a cruel smirk playing across his weathered face as he stepped closer. "You've got more backbone than your old man ever did. Slipping out of that window, stealing your car back—it's almost cinematic. Too bad it all ends right here, in a dusty old barn in the middle of nowhere."
"Where is my mother, Vance?" Julian demanded, his voice ringing out with fierce defiance despite the throbbing pain in his fractured ankle. "She has nothing to do with this anymore. Let Clara and Martha go. They aren't part of your revenge."
"Oh, they're all part of it now," Vance replied coldly, gesturing with his gun toward the two terrified women. "When the state police finally piece this together tomorrow morning, they’ll find a tragic murder-suicide scene. A disgruntled groom, a ruined wedding, a family destroyed by secrets and desperation. It writes itself, Julian. You shouldn't have gone digging into safes that didn't belong to you."
Julian slowly shifted his weight, putting all his endurance into his good leg, calculating the distance between himself and the nearest armed deputy. He knew the odds were impossible, but surrender meant certain death for all of them. He needed a distraction—something to break their concentration for even a single second.
Suddenly, Martha—who had remained silent and terrified the entire time—slumped hard against her wooden chair, tipping it over backward with a loud crash against the hardwood floor. "My chest!" Martha gasped, exaggerating the fall with brilliant theatricality. "I can't breathe! My heart!"

Both deputies instinctively flinched toward the noise, their attention snapping away from Julian for a fraction of a second. That split-second hesitation was all Julian needed.
With a fierce roar, Julian lunged forward, tackling the closest deputy directly into a stack of heavy wooden chairs near the buffet table. The man went down hard, his gun clattering across the floorboards. Julian scrambled for the weapon, but Vance recovered instantly, pivoting his revolver toward Julian and pulling the trigger just as the second deputy moved to intervene.
