Chapter 2 - The Sealed Envelope

The fluorescent light hummed overhead in the quiet locker room as Rheinhardt slammed his locker door shut with a resounding metal echo. His knuckles were still purple from the morning session. Across the narrow aisle, Maya sat calmly on a wooden bench, sliding a sheaf of official documents back into the heavy manila envelope the civilian had handed her. She didn't look up as Thomas approached, her expression betraying no emotion whatsoever.
"You've been digging where you shouldn't, Miller," Thomas said, keeping his voice dangerously low, abandoning all pretense of his usual friendly demeanor. "That file doesn't concern you. What happened in Berlin stayed in Berlin for a reason. If higher-ups wanted you to know, you would have received a direct briefing instead of playing courier for men in tailored suits."
Maya calmly tucked the envelope into her tactical rucksack and zipped it shut before lifting her gaze to meet his. There was no fear in her eyes, only a cold, calculating determination that made Thomas’s stomach churn.
"Berlin is exactly why I'm here, Thomas," she replied steadily, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "Men don't just walk away from an unrecorded intelligence leak with a promotion and a smile unless someone powerful is protecting them. You think your little scar on your forehead makes you look tough? It just marks you as a survivor of a botched extraction that cost three good soldiers their lives."
Thomas clenched his jaw so hard muscles ached down to his neck. He stepped into her personal space, towering over her by several inches, yet Maya didn't flinch an inch.
"You tread very carefully, Miller," Thomas warned, leaning down. "You think you uncovered a grand conspiracy, but you are just scratching the surface of something infinitely larger than your clearance level. If you open that file, you aren't just destroying my career; you are pulling a pin on a grenade that will level this entire base."
"Then maybe it's time everything came to light," Maya said calmly, standing up to face him eye-to-eye. "The cover-up ends today."
She brushed past him toward the exit, but before she reached the heavy metal door, Thomas caught her wrist with a sudden, bruising grip. Maya didn't scream or flinch; instead, she slowly turned her head and looked down at his hand gripping her arm.

"Let go, Thomas," she whispered, a chilling smile touching the corner of her lips. "Unless you want me to show everyone in the company the secondary surveillance footage I downloaded from your secure terminal five minutes before you walked into the gym."
