Chapter 11 - The Breach

The breaching charge detonated with a concussive shockwave that blew the heavy steel door off its reinforced hinges, sending a cloud of thick gray smoke billowing into the server room. Shards of metal and hot sparks showered across the floor as two heavily armored Blackwood contractors charged through the breach, their automatic rifles sweeping the room with lethal intent.
Thomas didn't wait for them to acquire targets. Drawing upon the razor-sharp reflexes honed during years of elite training, he stepped out from behind the server rack and fired two rapid, precise shots that struck the lead operative squarely in the ceramic chest plates, dropping him instantly.
The second contractor immediately pivoted, returning suppressive fire that forced Thomas to dive behind a concrete pillar as bullets chewed chunks out of the masonry.
"Twenty seconds!" Maya yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire, her eyes glued to the progress bar creeping slowly across the terminal screen. The percentage hit eighty-five percent, trembling on the edge of completion.
The surviving contractor advanced cautiously, weapon raised, stepping over his fallen comrade while keeping his sights locked on Thomas's position behind the pillar. Thomas checked his magazine—only four rounds remaining. He took a slow, deep breath, regulating his heart rate, preparing to make every single shot count in the confined space.
Before the contractor could round the corner, a heavy wrench hurled across the room by the terrified technician struck the operative squarely in the side of his helmet, throwing off his aim just long enough for Maya to draw her sidearm and deliver a single, decisive shot to his shoulder, dropping him to the floor.
"Five seconds!" Maya shouted, her hands hovering over the keyboard.
The progress bar reached ninety-nine percent, paused for a agonizing fraction of a second, and then flashed a brilliant, triumphant blue. TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.
"It's sent," Maya breathed, slumping back against the console with a profound wave of relief washing over her face. "The logs are in the hands of the Pentagon inspector general. There's no calling them back now."
Before either of them could draw a breath, the heavy emergency alarm system throughout the relay station began to wail, drowning out the hum of the servers. A harsh red strobe light flashed overhead, casting an ominous crimson glow across the room as the main facility speakers crackle to life with a familiar, chilling voice.

"Attention, rogue assets," Captain Vance Jr.'s voice echoed coldly through the intercom. "You've successfully uploaded a file to an empty inbox. The entire command network has been locked down under martial law. You have exactly two minutes to surrender before we vent the facility with lethal nerve gas."
