Chapter 15 - The Final Reckoning

The twin rotor wash of the federal law enforcement helicopters flattened the high grass along the riverbank as they touched down in a cloud of dust and gravel. Heavily armed federal marshals poured from the cabins in a disciplined, rapid deployment, surrounding Captain Vance Jr. and his private contractors before they could raise a single weapon in defense.

Vance Jr. stood frozen, his hand hovering uselessly over his holster as a federal commander stepped forward, reading the charges aloud while snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto the captain's wrists. The cold, corporate authority that had shielded Vance's cabal for months vanished instantly under the weight of federal jurisdiction.

Maya leaned against the muddy bank, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the tension finally drained from her shoulders. She looked over at Thomas, who stood tall in his mud-splattered U.S. Army camouflage uniform, the small red cut on his forehead stark against his pale skin. The false, defensive smile he had worn on the red mat was gone for good, replaced by a genuine, quiet expression of peace.

"Looks like your intelligence sources were a bit more reliable than you thought, Miller," Thomas said softly, offering her a hand up from the mud.

Maya took his hand, pulling herself up with a tired, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the very first time. "General Vance didn't send me to spy on you, Thomas. He sent me to find the one honest officer left in the unit who had the courage to finish what we started in Berlin."

As Captain Vance Jr. was led away toward one of the waiting helicopters in handcuffs, a senior federal investigator walked over, handing Maya a secure tablet displaying a high-priority clearance confirmation from the Pentagon. The official investigation into the Berlin extraction had officially been reopened, and the names of the fallen soldiers were finally cleared of treason.

Thomas looked out across the valley toward the distant mountain peaks where the sun was finally breaking through the heavy grey clouds, bathing the landscape in a warm, golden light. The scars—both physical and emotional—would remain, but the shadow that had hung over him for a decade had finally been lifted. He turned to Maya, nodding slowly as they walked side by side toward the helicopter that would take them home, ready at last to face whatever came next with absolute clarity and truth.
