Chapter 13 - The Drainage Culvert

The damp, frigid air of the concrete drainage culvert offered little comfort as Thomas and Maya crawled rapidly through the shallow, freezing water rushing beneath them. The beam of Thomas’s weapon-mounted flashlight cut through the murky darkness, illuminating slick concrete walls and tangled roots hanging from drainage grates far overhead. Behind them, the muffled sound of heavy machinery echoed through the mountain, signaling that Vance’s cleanup teams were already securing the perimeter above.
"Keep moving," Thomas urged over his shoulder, his breath pluming in the freezing air as his injured ribs ached with every physical exertion. "If they trace this culvert to the valley runoff, we'll have a reception committee waiting at the exit."
Up ahead, the technician was panting heavily, stumbling through the knee-deep water as exhaustion and fear took their toll. He slipped on a patch of algae, crashing hard into the concrete wall with a sharp cry of pain before sliding back down into the freezing stream.
Maya quickly crawled forward past Thomas, grabbing the technician under the shoulders and hauling him back to his feet. "Can you walk?" she demanded sharply, her voice echoing off the curved tunnel walls.
"I... I think I twisted my ankle," the technician whimpered, clutching his leg as water swirled around his waist. "Leave me here. You won't make it out if you're dragging me along."
Thomas stopped, turning back to look at them through the beam of his flashlight. The temptation to abandon the liability and save themselves was strong, mirroring the cold calculations of the military machine that had hunted them across the base. But looking at the terrified man, Thomas saw a reflection of himself ten months ago—a pawn caught in a game played by corrupt superiors who viewed human lives as expendable collateral.
"We don't leave people behind, Miller," Thomas said firmly, walking back to take the technician's other arm. "That's the difference between us and Vance. Grab his gear, Maya. We carry him together."
With synchronized effort, they hoisted the technician between them, pressing forward through the endless concrete labyrinth toward the distant glimmer of natural light at the end of the culvert. The fresh air grew stronger with every step, signaling that they were finally nearing the valley floor beyond the military reservation boundaries.

As they rounded the final bend of the drainage pipe, the blinding glare of daylight pierced the gloom, but it was immediately accompanied by the distinct, low rumble of idling military vehicles waiting just outside the exit grate.
